We had the good fortune of connecting with Domonique Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Domonique, what inspires you?
My inspiration comes from so many places, I would say that other women inspire me the most though. I love that we are all different but also so similar. I am constantly working with and servicing multifaceted women, from all backgrounds, with different styles, and who express their beauty in different ways. To be able to connect with them on such an intimate level keeps me motivated and inspired.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am creative and I honestly haven’t tapped into all aspects of it. I first was interested in hair which prompted me to attend cosmetology school. I eventually explored makeup and realized this is something I love. I am a self-taught artist and most of my work is on the everyday woman. I have more recently begun booking weddings and editorial shoots and I am looking forward to expanding my portfolio. My journey has been rough and I think my biggest struggle has been starting. Feeling like I wasn’t ready or that I didn’t have much to offer was an obstacle I have overcome, I’m proud of that. Finding my own lane and learning to master my style of makeup is something I’m also proud of. I love to enhance the beauty that is already there and that is what sets me apart, in my opinion. I have learned who my client is, who my tribe is, and what my purpose is. I want the world to know that my brand is all about making people feel beautiful in their own skin, respecting and honoring different beauty standards is a top priority. I also want to encourage women in their 30’s to do what their heart desires. I have been told that you cant make a real living doing makeup and I am living proof that you can, without celebrity clients, without social media popularity, You can do it!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a foodie and not really into the nightlife so I have a few good restaurants on my list. One of my favorites is 2 Urban Licks, I love their salmon chips and they have great drinks. Agave has a Crawfish past that is the bomb and there are many more great things on their menu. Sri Thai Kitchen & Sushi Bar in Atlantic station has the BEST lobster fried rice I’ve ever had. Dantannas is a great sports bar offering great appetizers, steak, and drinks. One other place I love is the aquarium.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother has always been my biggest supporter and one of the reasons I decided to start my business as a freelancer. She has always told me to “SET IT & FORGET IT”, and that’s what I did. I have met some great women/clients since starting out and they support me and keep me encouraged in my professional goal as well as educational goals. My God Sister, Lashawn has been a huge motivation to me and we have both watched each other’s dreams come to fruition. She has kept me encouraged when it mattered the most! Last but not least, Tekevious, my praying friend who has helped me keep faith in God’s plans for me and my business. She and I met in Cosmetology school 7yrs ago and have grown so much together. There are so many people I’ve met along the way that have motivated me in different ways. I’m thankful for them all.
