We had the good fortune of connecting with Teresas Richards and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Teresas, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process for starting my business was to create a natural, organic skincare and cosmetic line for all skintypes and color that is of professional quality yet affordable.

My goal is to be able to not only service my client’s makeup needs but also able to provide products for their skincare needs.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My natural, God given talent is drawing. I remember as a kid drawing faces and challenging myself to draw each picture with more detail to make it pop off the canvas. Little did I know at that time I would chose to become a professional makeup artist, considering I didn’t know such a profession existed well into my adulthood. After 15 years in the hair industry, I was looking for a change that was more exciting and creative. One day, I walked into an Ulta (beauty supply store) in Fredericksburg, VA and saw a young lady working as a freelance makeup artist with a cosmetic company, Studio Gear. I inquired about the position and decided to freelance myself; I soon after freelanced for other cosmetic lines such as Laura Mercier and Bobby Brown.

I learned more about the industry once I received training from an Echelon makeup artist, Suzanne Patterson, on how to become a professional media and film makeup artist myself and then decided to move Atlanta. I worked for several agencies along with other top makeup artists, photographers and celebrities and created my own brand.

I feel what sets me apart from most makeup artists is my professionalism and my ability to create a natural looking makeup application. I am a perfectionist, therefore I take extra care on how makeup looks and how its applied on the face; I am also attentive to my clients while they are in my care. It means a lot to me to know that they feel naturally beautiful and flawless; hence my motto was born “Natural beauty is flawless”.

My skincare and cosmetic line was inspired by me wanting to take care of my clients AFTER the makeup service. Given my training in cosmetic sales and esthetics, I often give consultations and skincare/cosmetic recommendations to better service my clients beyond the chair. Therefore, Artistry By Teresas LLC became a full service makeup and skincare business where services such as facials, waxing, classes and retail is provided for my clients.

My journey in this industry of over 20 years was not an easy one, considering I have had some major setbacks and life challenges along the way and I have wanted to give up many times. But I wouldn’t give up because I kept thinking that God would not have given me the vision if it was not meant for me. So I am walking in my purpose and very excited about my journey to come!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I typically enjoy places that gives cultural diversity. I enjoy going to markets, authentic cuisine restaurants, dancing and people watching. For me, Ponce City market in Midtown Atlanta offers so many diverse businesses and restaurants that gives anyone a mult-cultural experience. Then there’s the Beltline adjacent to the market, along with Piedmont park, where many concerts and events are held throughout the year and even some dancing spots that are very entertaining.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to my colleagues, friends and family who have helped and supported me on this journey! A special shoutout to those who believed in me more than I believed in myself, encouraging me to not give up on my dream. And most importantly, to God be the glory…without Him, none of this would be possible.
