Meet Akira Satoh | Musician and Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Akira Satoh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akira, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from Montreal, Canada. My ethnic background is Chilean and Japanese, which I feel are the foundations for my passion for Music. My parents are both musicians, my mother is more classically trained and my father has played more Andean folk since he was very young. I grew up with music being played around the house a lot, with a bunch of instruments within reach for me to muck about with. As a result, I have quite a connection with music, not only with making it but also listening to it. There’s such an indescribable joy I have whenever I hear a wonderful progression or timbre or anything that would be heard and used in the vast world of music.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I wouldn’t really say something glaring would set me apart from others, and I firmly believe that competition has no place in music. However, if I were to boast about something it’d be the arrangements I have for my music and even some of my production work. I’m honestly quite proud of the progressions I write and I have a lot of fun making some of my own projects veer off into weird chromatic changes. It definitely has not been easy to get to the place I’m at right now, even if it’s still relatively low in the bizarre hierarchy of the music world. I guess another thing I could be proud of is my output, though maybe not in the public sense. I just tend to make a lot of stuff since ideas are plentiful. The one lesson of sorts I’ve learned would be to just keep going, and always be open to feedback. Having a group of friends to share music with is great, since half of the time we just send each other stuff on a whim and it’ll be almost like an art critique session, but way less formal.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hopefully, this city mentioned is Montreal since I’ve never come close to stepping foot in Atlanta. An itinerary in this city is unneeded since I feel like the best time is to just walk around and see where your feet take you in your travels.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Alongside family, every one of my friends whom I have worked with and talked to deep into the night deserves praise. Music is such a communal thing, so having met the people within my collective, that being Izzeo, Kalamari, Joshua Morata, Kryssi, callmesolstice, among many other wonderful friends. I also have a friend in Arizona, who works under a variety of aliases but notably Sonder, Black Pagoda, and Hashirat, who deserves so much recognition and praise. Their sound design abilities are wild and we think extremely alike. One major person who I’ll mention is my friend Hojean, who has been skyrocketing into recognition. Funnily enough, it’s the day after his first concert ever which also happens to have sold out, and I’m still feeling that high of being able to have played keys for him at Baby’s All Right.
