Meet Terry Mott | Your friendly neighborhood tax professional & Makeup artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Terry Mott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Terry, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
We opened the doors of About Your Taxes in 2016 and initially I was still actively working in corporate America as a Sales Administrator with an international automotive group and that position was full time 40-45 hours per week. I quickly learned when going from the dealership to the tax office that I needed to find a way to build my personal business whilst still providing the same level of exceptional performance at my primary job so i began to do a split schedule at the tax office. I began going to the office on my 2 off days from the dealership and only working 3-4 nights at the tax office from 5 pm – 9 pm. I eventually got a great hold and grasp on how to manage the 2 as well as my personal life being that I was (and still happy to be) in a long term committed partnership of 6 years.
Over the course of time I now only work for myself with my mom, in the tax office, helping with operations and client tax preparation. I utilize the freedom outside of peak income tax season to finally enjoy being an adult and I’ve been taking vacations with friends and focusing on turning my house into a home. Work/Life balance for me has become the focal point of my future and goals, which I am very vocal about with clients so I keep those lines of communication open and clear.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a local tax preparation service provider and we also consider ourselves financial advisors in some ways. My mom and I noticed that over the years, most average every day Americans knew little to nothing about filing their income taxes let alone how they could get the most out of every tax season and begin establishing a worthwhile financial portfolio.
We fancy ourselves to be educators and our clients’ biggest cheerleaders in life because we have a vested interest in their overall financial future. We aspire to help any and every potential client that contacts us learn more about how to make their own wealth and build financial stability for generations to come.
We walk our clients through every step of every preparation appointment as if it’s their first time riding a bicycle. We keep doing that until we know they’re ready to take the training wheels off and ride on their own. We are here to help families by making their futures as bright as we possibly can with financial prosperity where we can.
I am personally most proud of the relationships I have with my clients. We are more like family and close friends than anything else and that is truly what makes me the best tax professional for them. It’s clear once an individual reaches out to me that I know no strangers and anyone is welcome into this family. I look out for each and every one of my clients as I would my own relatives.
Running a business that is so heavily contingent upon government cooperation is NOT for the feint of heart either. We have faced many challenges in dealing with the IRS, taxpayer advocate programs, continued education course, and IRS auditor appointments just to ensure that we are operating a smooth and legitimate business. We’ve always passed any test with flying colors and approached any obstacle with vigor and determination to see it through with our clients.
I’ve learned so much about being a constant student being that tax laws and regulations change throughout the year every year and that is so humbling in the best of ways. It’s challenging but fun and so rewarding because I use that knowledge to be of further benefit to my clients.
We want the world to know that we are the income tax champions for Americans and we will continue educating and enriching lives one family at a time. Our story is that of many ups and downs but with the right mindset, determination, and a little perseverance anything is possible.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For an amazing fine dining experience I would definitely stop at Capital Grille in Buckhead.
First Watch is a MUST HAVE in Johns Creek for brunch.
Lululemon is a guilty pleasure of mine if you’re an active person who likes to be comfortable but fashionable and ready for a quick jog at any moment. The atmosphere and energy of the staff at the Avalon store is unmatched!!!
Lake Lanier for any water sports fun you may be interested in or even if you want to do some local camping.
I am a sucker for some great seafood and I would immediately take anyone to VIP New Orleans in Jonesboro to get some great seafood take out.
An invigorating hike at Panther Creek to see the amazing waterfalls and enjoy a nice swim at the bottom of the falls.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I honestly wouldn’t be where I am without the continued love & support of so many people so I will give honorable mentions to a select few but I assure you all that this is only a minuscule fraction of the individuals who’ve helped mold me into the tax professional & person that I am today:
Riley Alcock – Best friend, supermom, and master cosmetologist
Joey Wright – Best friend, yoga instructor, and wellness coach
Judy Solsberry – Mott: My supportive and encouraging mother/ Owner of About Your Taxes
Katrice Brinson – Sister, mentor, tax professional
Jeremiah Anderson – Life Partner and IT Software Engineer
DJ Forte – Extended brother and automotive technician
