We had the good fortune of connecting with Michell Jenkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michell, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process was very simple. I have a very strong personality. As a young girl, I was always against having limits placed on me. So I always had thoughts of working for myself, I knew I could never have anyone be a boss to me. I loved business & I used to play business, while friends wanted to play with dolls. Starting my own business was inevitable, there was no other option for me.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my career at the wonderful age of 19 as a licensed cosmetologist. I was able to build a large clientele within my first year of being in business, that sustained me financially for 15 years. By the age of 20 I was able to secure making six figures in a quiet neighborhood in Queens. I started working fairly young so it gave me the opportunity to explore a lot of the different areas it the beauty industry offers. My first start was in a salon working on a commision basis. Then i took on the postition as of salon manager & during that time I worked fashion week shows (summer ,fall )yearly, magazine photshoots, music videos & then into the bridal industry, Once there it became my passion for a while, I even learned makeup to complement my hairstyling services. I fully enjoyed being a hair stylist , but the transition to be a wellness coach started arounnd 36 years old.
I had become a mom by then & was clear what women were lacking in their own selfcare. It wasn’t until I had my second son that I realized what some of the women I serviced all these years were going through. Once I understood I transitioned into being a wellness coach.
I was able to get where I am today by working very hard physically. Though I could have done some things very differently, sometimes you just dont know. what you don’t was not easy at all because I worked over 80 hours a week for 6 years. It took a tremendous toll on my body from all the standing & ingesting chemicals . The plus to it all was, that I was able to connect with so many different women. As a hairstylist you typically become the therapist to all of your clients & that is the area that I absolutley thrived in.
I realized that I was able to overcome my physical challenges by researching & learning the most effective selfcare practices. I realized the best way to get my body healthy was to respect it. Some of the other challenges I realized were financial. I was able make a six figure income but I needed to learn how to keep it & scale.
Scaling wasn’t a word we used often in my era or at least I didnt, so I sought mentorship & counsling about my finances.
I still managed to make repeatative dumb mistakes when I didnt’t Iisten. I begin to take a deeper dive into eductating myself & do so regularly .
What I would love for eveyone to know about my brand is that it’s 100% authentic from day 1! My brand takes you through a journey of self love, respect . Helping women discover & embrace their differences in order to live to freely. My story is one of of a young lady who was ahead of her time, one who took chances & lives abundantly still. Leading women into sef discover y.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That is a breeze I’m from NY & I love living in the best of both worlds. To start off I would start right in Manhatten. To be exact we would visit Bryant park & enjoy the ice skating. There is a nice restaurant that we could sit & enjoy there as well while watching the skating happen, the views are magnificent!
We would head over to 42nd. again for the shopping, & views of the busy city. We would definitely take in a Broadway play & have dinner at Carmines family-style restaurant. The bus tour is a must to cover ground & catch the view of most of the prominent places including the Empire State building. Fifth Ave is a must, especially around the holidays, touring the windows of Saks Fifth ave while eating the honey roasted nuts.
The tree at Rockafella center houses the famous tree of the year! Before leving the city grabbing pastries from Magnolia bakery is a must, along with a shish kabob from the street vendor outside.
Let’s not leave out the horse carriage ride around Central Park!
If we are still talking Vibes downtown Brookly is one. We would spend time partaking in High tea at The Williamsburg Hotel. After we would walk right down the block to the Brooklyn Bathhouse spa.
The ferry to Governors Island would be a thing but I prefer it in the Spring & Summer because you can pack a lunch & spend the day biking riding, reading or nothing but people watching by the water.
Finally, after all the dramatic hustling of the city, we would go towards upstate NY into Dutchess or Putnum county area for a laid-back wine tour. Last but not least we could head back to my home town Nassau county long island. There we can relax in the suburbs & do the mall visit & restaurants. In a few diffeent towns there are areas to check out The nautical mile in Freeport, The resteraunts that in Rockville Centre.
Last but not least we would end our week with a visit to the Spa in Montauk long Island called Gurneys. In my opinion after al of this we would have covered afair amount of hot spots in New York.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shoutout to my parents. They gave me love, freedom & the opportunity to be myself.
