We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Mathis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angela, why did you pursue a creative career?
I didn’t set out with the intention of pursuing a career as an art model, it was something that evolved from what I thought would be a one time thing. I have always loved photography, specifically landscape photography, and decided to learn how to use a digital camera that I had purchased years before. After I joined regional photography groups, I saw that many members needed people to practice with to learn their skills. I offered up my time to pose as a way to learn from the other side of the camera. Four years later, I am still learning from the other side of the camera by working with some of the most talented artists and photographers in the Southeast and around the world. I continue modeling as a way to break the stereotypes that are so rampant in social media and marketing today. I want to be a role model for those that don’t fit the skinny, young, blonde/blue eyed aesthetic. Yes, you can be short/curvy/older/saggy and still be beautiful and deserving of beautiful pictures.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I often joke that I am not the artist, I am the medium with which the artist creates. I am different in quite a few ways. I am older and modeling has long been a young person’s game. I am confident in my self and body as it is, scars and all. I am not afraid of looking silly or weird while working directly with artists to create their vision. I have been blessed with a few sculptures, fine art paintings as well as thousands of gorgeous images of myself over the years. But most importantly, I got to be a part of that creative process and learn so much about the artist while we were creating. I have met and made lasting friendships with so many people while modeling. I have grown my brand organically with a good work ethic, an eye for my own style and saying no to things that don’t align with the brand/look that I want to put forth. I did a lot of trade work while building up my reputation and portfolio. I take the time to support and promote the people that I work with. I am happy to offer advice when asked and not afraid to ask questions of the people that I admire most. I firmly believe that when you give good energy, you get good energy back and then some.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite outdoor spots in the Upstate are Table Rock State Park and Bald Rock Preserve. You can’t beat the great hiking trails and beautiful views from both. Falls Park in downtown Greenville, SC is such a great place to relax while having access to so many great restaurants, bars and shopping all within walking distance. Vault & Vator is a great speakeasy style bar with the best handcrafted cocktails. There are too many great restaurants to choose just one but Halls Chophouse and Coral are a few that I would recommend. For a cool place that is near my home, I love to go to Hanz & Franz Biergarten. The atmosphere and food are just fantastic.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to my husband of 17 years, Verlin. This man has been a constant cheerleader in my life, always encouraging me when I get down on myself or want to quit.
