We had the good fortune of connecting with Giovanni Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Giovanni, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is God. Nothing I’ve ever been able to do would have been remotely possible without the backing of Him. He’s been with me every step of the way and keeps my head above water whenever I feel the pressure of life starting to get the best of me. It’s impossible to list only one, but another important factor behind my success is my ability to perfectly execute my emotions and the voices of others into a creative concept of poetry. I pride myself in consistently working on my wordplay, double/triple entendres, and metaphors to keep people engaged and going back to read a poem that has numerous different meanings. As I’ve worked diligently on my writing for the past couple of years, being able to finally hold my debut collection of poetry, “Incognito”, in my hands has shown me just how far I’ve came in my writing/life and how much I have left to do.

Please tell us more about your business. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today business-wise. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
To say my journey has been easy is the farthest from the truth. I would say the most difficult thing to get through was being confident in showing my poetry to the world as a black man. It’s no secret that the societal norm of being a black male is to have a “tough” persona and only be capable of pursuing and succeeding in basketball or football. So, being comfortable and confident in myself and gift to create a lane for aspiring black men who have a passion for poetry is a challenge within itself. Some lessons I’ve learned along the way is that I have to give myself permission to allow my heart to break to be able to move forward in any aspect of my life. I view lessons as opportunities to grow as a person and artist throughout my trajectory. I’m most proud of how my creative juices never stop flowing. I’m able to continuously unravel the layers I have within myself and finding inspiration within those cracked pieces.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Special shoutouts to my family for the support surround Incognito. Shoutout to my brother Rob (@7lvck_) for shooting the rollout for my book, my brother 4L Stevon (@iamstevonlester) for the consistent love & support, my sister Gigi (@gibanks_) for being my biggest champion throughout my journey, fellow poet Mahrie (@mah.rie239), my big brother 2Gs (@coldcooper8), and so many others to name, but you know who you are!
