We had the good fortune of connecting with Cairo Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cairo, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance? In my opinion, work life balance is such a foreign concept in the US. So many countries pride themselves on providing balance for their residents. But here in the states, it’s like you are born to work until you can’t — taking no real time for yourself unless you are sick or put in time off requests months before, and even then, worried about how you’re gonna make up the time. One of my biggest reasons for transitioning to work for my self is that I refuse to continue spending my entire life working long hours for whatever amount someone assigned to me. I’ve missed out on so much because I felt like the only way to get where I want to be is to work, work, work! It’s been ingrained in us for so long, ie, “Sleep when you die” or “I’ll sleep when I’m rich”…. That’s such an unhealthy way of living, but so many don’t have any other option. Thankfully, I’m in possession of a skill that makes that possible.
So, for the first time in my life, I actually have work life balance. 4 day week, take time off when needed or wanted — It’s been the best decision I’ve made thus far. I’m no longer overwhelmed, or exhausted all the time. When I’m at work, I’m able give 150%. But when I’m not working, there’s time for myself, for loved ones, for traveling, and/or for any other endeavors I’d like to take on…
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work. Hair Love Salon Studio is a direct result of my love of hair. But it’s also the love that my clients have to put into their own hair when not in the studio.
I pride myself in being able to work with multiple hair textures. It’s not easy, but it is imperative to be able to service any client that sits in my chair. I’ve have made extra efforts to expand my curly hair business, which I am most proud of. It’s such a hard thing to find a new stylist that works with textured hair, so I try to make that process as easy as possible. During my sessions, we go over proper care, styling techniques, product suggestions… it’s basically an education session. I’m forever growing and learning, and that’s what my clients love to see. I’m grateful for my clients, as they follow me on this journey.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to? Well it’s very dependent on the weather of course, but i’d say — brunch on my rooftop
– If it’s their first time here… maybe hit the MLK museum and other historical sites
– Walk the Beltline
– Head to Ponce City Market… grab a bite and shop a little
– Maybe even hit City Winery since it’s right there
– Then possibly Little 5 or Edgewood.. look for some Black owned places to show off and support
– For dinner, maybe hit up one of my fav Greek spots, Kyma
I’m all about good food, good vibes, and black owned (when possible). I’m also not from Atlanta, so I’m always discovering new places.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition? Well, of course I’d have to shoutout my family and my partner for supporting, encouraging, and motivating me to do whatever I want. God, for guiding my steps and placing the right people in my life to help me through my struggles. And believe it or not, the Pandemic has been pretty monumental in my success. It has shifted so many factors in my life, and I had no control. So I took a HUGE chance leaving my secured salon job, making decent money, for something that wasn’t at all guaranteed, and could any day shut down due to Covid 19. All I knew was that my salon home no longer felt like home, so I needed to do something to control my situation.
And that’s when Hair Love Salon Studio was born.
