We had the good fortune of connecting with Kahlil Cade and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kahlil, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I was always into the arts. From elementary school to college, I had an interest in drawing. In between drawing, I liked to act, beatbox, dance, and rap. I used to watch music videos all day in middle and high school, but I never thought that I would be making them one day. I always thought that I would always stay in front of the camera.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I bring other people’s visions to life in the form of videos. What sets me apart from other video directors is that I’ve always been creative in other avenues such as music and acting. Getting to where I am today takes dedication. I have been practicing filming and video editing for 3 years now. After a lot of time thinking about the time I felt like i was wasting being at a job I had no long-term interest in, I quit my 9-5 job 1 year ago and never looked back. I felt like there was a sign for me to take my dedication to the next level and let my skills guide me forward. It feels great to make a living doing what I love. There are slow weeks of no work and there are times where I feel like I am not charging enough for my services, but I understand that these situations result in growth and experience. Trail and error leads to success, which makes success more worth it. I would like the world to know that I work hard for my clients. I understand what it is like to spend money on a bad production or an unreliable person, so through the whole process, from pre-production to the finished product, I make sure my clients understand that.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For food spots I like Atlantic Station, and they have a movie theater. For a nice walk, I like to go to Piedmont Park. For exercising and sight-seeing, Stone Mountain is the place to be.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First off, super shout out to Marsha Brouard for referring me to Voyage ATL. Shout out to my long-time friend and brother Andrew, owner of Panda Jewelers, for creating my first spark of interest into video production. He motivated me to independently create my own content, paving the way for creating for many others. I’d like to thank Joseph, owner of Georgia Tex, for teaching me how to legitimately start my business and for boosting my motivation to be a business owner, he is a great mentor. Shout out to my first client, Silent Flo, for giving me the chance to bring his vision to life. Shout out to my friends and fellow photographers Theon of @theopolisart and Rick of @dvidflims for their help and support in my endeavors.
