Work-Life Balance: is there such a thing?

A host of factors, developments, and dynamics have made most industries more competitive than ever. As a result so many of us wonder whether there is still such a thing as work-life balance. We reached out to the community to hear perspectives on finding the right balance.

Over time I have tried to focus more on composition, getting the correct exposure and white balance in camera during the shoot so I can spend less time behind a camera doing edits. In some aspects of my business I subcontract images to a professional retoucher. Doing these things have allowed me to spend more time with my family, do other shoots and even rest. Since opening my business in 2019 I’ve always struggled with finding a healthy work life balance. The struggle that i believe most entrepreneurs especially first generation, is the feeling of not wanting to miss out. For me, I felt like i couldn’t miss out on any clients because “what if i never have a busy day again?”always was my motivation. So in turn i worked 12hr days and took 20+ clients 6 days a week. After a year i realized this wasn’t a sustainable work model and would ultimately leave me feeling burnt out and unhappy with the life that i have Created for myself so i began Slowly cutting back my work hours. It goes without saying that spending excessive time working can burn you out & drive you to stress. I try not to do anything work related after work hours like checking me emails & receiving work calls. I make it priority to set time to do other things i enjoy.
