I used to be 100% committed to furthering my art and career at any cost, especially through college. I look back on the amount of work and stress I was bringing into my life and marvel at how I didn’t break down. I put far too much stress and meaning into things that eventually would come to not matter too much. I now focus more of my efforts on family and friends and feel much more balanced. I do still set daily goals and accomplish things, but it’s at a more leisurely pace allowing for a focus on relaxation and meditation Read more>>
Madi Godfrey | Queer Hairstylist
In the beginning of my career I struggled so so much with keeping work at work. Being a hairstylist means so much to me and I would constantly reply to clients after work hours or first thing in the morning when I woke up because I was afraid if I didn’t reply fast enough that they wouldn’t come to see me. I, very recently, have learned to set down my phone and be present. I do still struggle sometimes with replying outside of work hours but for the most part I try to be present with family and friends. Another issue I have had in the past is employers taking advantage of my work ethic. I am a very type A person, very organized and clean and typically when a boss notices that I am suddenly doing way more work than I get paid for. I would work shifts I wasn’t comfortable with and would come in at the drop of a hat because I wanted to be liked, but in that, I lost a lot of valuable time with family, friends, and my partner. At my current job I have a wonderful boss who gives me time off to spend with my family, partner, and friends. I don’t feel like I have to do tasks at the drop of a hat and I am slowly starting to recreate my ideal work life balance. Read more>>

Wow, it has changed tremendously. I’m still having problems with balancing work life , believe it or not. I think I’m so caught up in the moment working, perfecting , still being as student to my craft that sometimes I forgot about life. The normal things and most important things, such as family and friends. I’ve missed out on a lot of things trying to reach my goals but also missed out on the love that I need when I’m just going through it. Read more>>
