Perspectives on work life balance

The Coronavirus has given many us an opportunity to pause and think about life, our purpose, and even the right work life balance. What’s your perspective and has it changed over time?

Earlier in my career journey before I had a family, I believed in striving for work life balance because at that point life for me was less complex and therefore balance was attainable. As my cup got fuller with a family, growth in my career, and personal and professional activities, I quickly realized that it was less about balance and more about having healthy boundaries that enabled me to be fulfilled and not overly compromising in the many aspects of my life. When you think about balance, you think about ensuring that each aspect of your life gets the same amount of time and energy but there are some things that naturally need to be prioritized and everything doesn’t require the same amount of time and energy at the same time. My work life has changed dramatically from becoming a mom. I have a 3 year and it can be hectic sometimes. I normally work mostly from morning to evening. After I finish working with clients all day I’m in mommy mode. Once I put my daughter to sleep I’m back to spending time creating content for the rest of the night. Read more>>

I am actually happy you guys asked this question because it is a topic that is near and dear to my heart nowadays. And that is largely because I have done such a poor job over the years exercising a healthy work life balance. I can admit that to myself now because I can have a better picture of what a healthy work life balance looks like for me. Balancing my professional and personal life became extremely important to me when I became a parent. If I’m being honest, it became prioritized even more when I became a single parent. I wear a lot of titles these days, but none of them hold more weight in my life than being a parent. My son Legend is by far the most important thing in the world to me. Initially, I viewed the concept through a conventional lens, striving to meticulously allocate a set number of hours to work and the remaining to personal pursuits. However, as I delved deeper into my career, I began to experience a paradigm shift in my understanding of this delicate equilibrium. I’ve come to realize that when one is genuinely passionate about their work, it transcends the confines of mere professional obligations; it becomes a source of fulfillment and, dare I say, a personal hobby.
