Perspectives on Risk-Taking

There is a wealth of academic research that suggests that differences in risk appetite are at the heart of differences in career and business trajectories. We wanted to go beyond the theory and ask real people from the community about their perspectives and experiences with risk and risk taking.

I have taken many risks throughout my career and many of them have brought me where I am today. I do not think about risks in a way where that risk can be a liability but something I can learn from and better myself, my business, and even others around me. Taking risks such as applying to Clark Atlanta University, as it was not my first college choice. I think that everyone should take a risk at some point in their lives. I see risk as an opportunity to bet on oneself. It’s like you’ve learned and absorbed so much in this life; why wouldn’t you want to put what you’ve learned to the test and bet on yourself? Personally, taking risks has truly impacted my life. When I decided to quit my 9 to 5 job and go full-time in my freelance career as a photographer, it was a pivotal moment. I’m cautious of them but I don’t run from risks. The biggest role I’ve had was when I joined the military because the biggest risk with wearing that uniform was loosing my life. I medically retired after 16yrs and I don’t regret it all because being a soldier was a major part of my life and taught me so much about myself, my peers and this country.
