We had the good fortune of connecting with Zoey Qu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zoey, what matters most to you?
Always keep curious and adventure. I have always been full of curiosity and childlike innocence about the world as an adult. Being mature doesn’t mean getting old. Curiosity is an excellent quality we have since childhood. It helps me better understand the world and makes me full of enthusiasm for the world. My adventurous spirit makes me dare to try new things and constantly drives me to explore the unknown things in the world. Gave up a stable job and becoming a freelancer was a brave decision that changed my life. I enjoy being an illustrator very much now. It’s a new journey for me. In addition, curiosity and an adventurous spirit are important sources for creating the illustration. I am willing to try different painting media or styles in the creation process instead of always using the way I’m good at. Although sometimes the result is not so successful, but what’s the worst that can happen?

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The most popular comment on my works is color design, which I am proud of. I am good at arranging and composing elements with colors. When I was painting, I had an intuition in my mind telling me, “Yes, this place should use blue, or, this place lacks some bright yellow.” This intuition is based on the basic knowledge of color and is related to a lot of practice. Meanwhile, I also observe other excellent illustrators’ color design works, which is also a great way to learn. Right now, I mainly focus on advertising and self-promotional. Advertising illustration is designed to convey a commercial, political, or ideological objective. Illustrators need to cater to the public’s aesthetics to create attractive images. However, I personally prefer to create illustrations that guide the public’s aesthetics and have commercial value. Illustrator is a profession with imagination and creativity. We can influence and create aesthetic diversity, which is also the goal I keep pursuing. Self-promotion advertising is the commercialization and branding of personal works, and the form of creation is more freedom. Compared with language and words, I prefer to use my works to express my thoughts and attitudes. Creating a personal brand is an excellent platform to convey information to the audience. I believe my brand will meet you all in the near future.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First of all, I will take her to the aquarium, Coca Cola World, and the zoo in Atlanta. The aquarium and Coca Cola world are landmark tourist attractions. The reason why I chose the zoo is that I can see Pandas in Atlanta! Pandas are rare even in China. I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t have the opportunity to see Pandas when I was in China, but I saw them here! Because I live in midtown, which has many good brunch and coffee shops, and their music taste is also excellent, I will take my friends to coffee shops to relax, read books, listen to music or observe pedestrians during the day. If he or she still has energy in the evening, we’ll meet at the bar.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are two persons that I want to give shout-out. The first person is my former landlord. Her advice helped me a lot when I was frustrated by the gap between ideal and reality at work and struggled to give up a stable job and study abroad. Another person is my friend Beta. He is a person who keeps sincere and full of romance. These two qualities are very valuable in the adult world. He is a dynamic person. I am always influenced by his enthusiasm when I get along with him. More importantly, I like his sincerity and kindness towards friends, which has gradually changed my attitude towards life and getting along with others.
