Meet Yn-nek Grice-jones

Today we’re excited to be connecting with Yn-nek Grice-jones again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.
Yn-nek, always such a pleasure connecting with you and thank you for sharing your stories, insights and inspiring messages with our community. We’re looking forward to getting the download and what you have been up to since our last interview, but first can you briefly introduce yourself to folks who might have missed the prior conversation.
Hey my name is Yn-Nek Grice-Jones and I am a self taught loctician going on six years now since 2019. My brand is TWISTEDBYTOOTSIELLC. I specialize in everything that has to do with locs, from starting locs , loc colors, trimming , detoxing, repairing locs and even making loc extensions.
What sets me apart from different locticians has to be my ability to have a strong connection with my clients. I get to know my clients and much as I can when it comes to their locs and most importantly my handmade loc products.
I make loc products in different fragrances based on the season of the year. I like to get feedback from my clients on what fragrances they’ll like for the season and I take that into consideration. I make loc growth oil. Loc mist and loc butter . All of my products will help your locs grow and flourish in the best way possible if used correctly and with a timely usage.
The highlight of my journey besides making new and more clientele has to be getting a car and with that I will be doing mobile services in my area very soon. You’ll see and hear more from TWISTEDBYTOOTSIELLC. “Where twisting locs isn’t just a hobby, it’s a passion”

Awesome, so we reached out because we wanted to hear all about what you have been up to since we last connected.
Things have been going steady honestly. But it’s never easy when it comes to running your own business by yourself. Soon enough when I will have a team of three working with me , but for now even though it’s tough running your own business you gotta do what you have to in order to make your business run.
The good , the bad and the ugly when it comes to being a business owner is being and staying consistent no matter how draining it gets. From recording your own content to editing your own pics and videos then posting to multiple social networks may not be easy but it’s most definitely possible and it may be hard to catch up with the latest trends but in some cases that’s not always the answer- as long as you have the tools to bring in your audience to your platform that’s all that matters. Some weeks you may not have as many clients as the next but it’s very important to stay humble and always be the first person to push yourself forward and to the top.
The best part about having your own business in my opinion is always being open to doing and learning new things that can add another source of income to your business. When I first started doing locs I wasn’t even washing locs because I didn’t know much about washing other people’s head besides my own – I was only doing regular retwists and two strand styles.
The more I learned and saw from videos the more confident I got to add more services. Not to mention the best part is making your own prices for your services- when I first started doing locs I wasn’t even washing doing it for free or even just as low as thirty dollars- I didn’t know what I was doing but I was willing to charge low just to make income from my practice and time – today I charge more than triple the price and that’s all because I got better and learned more. Starting your business is never about the money- but eventually you do wanna charge for your time and elevating skills. With my journey evolving I will keeping pushing to eventually have my own salon suite as well as doing mobile services to reach my clients that can’t make it to me.

We also want to give folks a chance to get to know you a bit better so we’ve prepared a fun lightning round of questions. Ready?
Favorite Movie: My favorite all time movie has to be spider man. The original spider man with Tobey Maguire. Since I was young and introduced to spider man I been a fan since.
Favorite Book: My all time favorite book has to be the fault in our stars by John Greene. The way the book has so much detail than the movie I can honestly say John Greene had an amazing way of words when it comes to his stories.
Favorite Band or Artist: My favorite artists is Chris Brown because that man is multitalented. His singing, dancing , acting and performances are just the best of the best and he his most definitely the modern day Michael Jackson.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up: As funny as this sounds when I was a young girl . I wanted to always be an author. As the times past I still have a great love for story writing but I tend to take my talents else where.
Favorite Breakfast Food: My favorite breakfast food has to be oatmeal and fruit- brown sugar oatmeal with strawberries, blueberries, and walnuts with honey. The best breakfast in my opinion
What are you most excited about in the coming year?
In the coming year I’m most excited about finally being able to be mobile and seeing my clients outside of the salon. Don’t get me wrong doing hair at home isn’t boring but a new environment and scenery will be a step out my comfort zone and I’m ready for it . This summer I might even take it a step further and have a set up at my local river and do a few services there as well. I really feel like this year will be a year of charge of scenery. Of course I will not be alone on my mobile calls just to stay on the safe side when it comes to traveling but I will enjoy this new year and what it has to bring.
