We had the good fortune of connecting with Wendy Bradley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wendy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Ever since I was little I have enjoyed being creative. I find painting to be a process that involves problem solving and creative thinking. I had taken many painting classes as a child and young adult, but didn’t start painting on a regular basis until I took an art class with my Mom about 10 years ago. Many of the students in the class were professional artists who inspired me to start selling my paintings. I began by looking on line at galleries and the type of artists they represented and starting emailing the galleries that I thought would be a good fit for my work. My business started from there. I have been very fortunate to work with many wonderful gallery and shop owners who have put my work in collector’s homes.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My paintings have been called beautiful, uplifting and whimsical. I find inspiration in the floral markets and landscapes in the South as well as from photographs that I have taken on family vacations. From painting as a child and teen to doing craft projects with my three children, I have always had a love of the creative process. I enjoy the challenge of finding the right combination of colors and composition to create an aesthetically pleasing piece. I paint with bright and vibrant colors and use a lot of texture in my work. I even go as far as to use pieces of acrylic paint from my palette to add texture and depth to each of my pieces. My goal with my paintings is to make people smile. I think the biggest influence on my work was a cartooning class I took as a teen with an Atlanta Journal Constitution cartoon artist. My paintings today still reflect the whimsical nature associated with cartoons.
My art has been featured in numerous galleries in the South as well as at Crossroads at Crabapple Art and Antique Show, Crabapple, GA; Spotlight on Art, Atlanta, GA; Art for Inspiration, Nashville, TN; Wesleyan Artist Market, Duluth, GA; Marietta Trailfest Fence Gallery, Marietta, GA as well as representing Burton Gallery in the October/November issue of Smoky Mountain Living Magazine.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to go to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Gibbs Gardens, Braves games, Georgia Football games and wonder around Athens, GA.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Allison Schrade, owner of the Alpharetta Flower Market and Bantam and Bloom, inspired my work more that anyone. I was fortunate enough to have a studio space in the Alpharetta Flower Market for many years and was only a few steps away from inspiration for many of my floral paintings as well as advice on how to run and grow a small business.
