We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyrone Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyrone, can you tell us about a book that has had a meaningful impact on you?
Black Gangster, by Donald Goines, was the first book I ever read when I was a teenager. It was given to me by a teacher who was trying to help me re-direct my focus. I think he knew it would hold my attention, which he was right about. I was fascinated by the story and for the first time in my life was fulfilled by the experience of FINISHING. Today, I read at least one book a week many of which are about self development.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I first graduated from college I thought my life was going to look a lot different than it does now. I attended Carnegie Mellon University for acting and thought I would move to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an actor. Somewhere along that journey I realized that my soul just wasn’t fulfilled. It took me a while to find my rhythm and cut out the noise of social pressures, but eventually `I started to trust my instincts. Today I’ve managed to create a multimillion dollar company and consulted new entrepreneurs on realizing their potential to do the same. I think I’m unique in that I help business owners to simplify. My wife likes to joke that I’m a man of few words— let’s get to the point.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a cigar lover so everything begins and ends with a stogie for me. Atlanta has a lot of great cigar bars. You get food, music, drinks, and great ambiance. I’d also suggest visiting the many historic districts and landmarks the city has to offer. Touring some of the museums, and if time permits, catching a show at one of the local theaters. Of course, you can’t leave before strolling the Atlanta Beltline.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Freedom Theatre in Philadelphia, PA was a game changer in my life. It’s where I first I participated in performing arts training that included acting, dance, poetry, voice, miming, and diction. Through these disciplines I learned about respect, collaboration, focus, process, and performance. Those faculties became the foundation for my working habits.
