We had the good fortune of connecting with Ty Danyell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ty Danyell, how do you think about risk?
To me, risk taking is the only way to go! Even if it doesn’t work out right away taking that risk puts you one step further to what will end up working out.
I took a risk when I jumped right into being a full time freelancer. There’s nothing easy about it. It’s actually gotten harder as the years have gone on. But I’ve learned so much that I never would have if I didn’t just do it.
I’ve also tried so many avenues in my career that I said I wouldn’t, being on the outside looking in. All it did was build my confidence and make me want to take more risks!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is that I can’t be put in a category. No one is going to tell me I need to choose between hair, makeup and modeling, even though they’ve tried.
I’m going to do all I’m passionate and the way I see fit ! I’m most proud about staying true to myself and continuing to be versatile when people want to place me in a box.
I got where I am today by constantly and consistently submitting myself to projects. Getting work, exposure, learning, trying new things, have all made me who I am.
None of it was easy though. I dove into my industry professionally pretty quickly because I was believed in. But I still had to build and tighten my skills. So as many yes’s as I would hear, I would hear double no’s. I just did all I could to get better..and having set back after set back but somehow still going was the only way to overcome any of it
Also, just doing the work! That will get you where you need to go no matter how slow!
I learned that people will tell you you can’t because you don’t want to do things their way, but do it anyway. I have been very fortunate to be able to be critiqued and tested by some of the best in my industry. I want people to stay true to themselves even if it’s scary.
It is very scary trying to navigate in a world you have no professional skill in, but want to be in so bad. But if you really want it passion is the only skill you need; it’ll come. Even today, I am still not where I want to be but I have not and will not give up.
I want you to know, I don’t care what it looks like, struggle is apart of the process. It’s so annoying but it builds character and that’s all that matters in the end
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh man okay so I loveeee when it’s a nice day out and we can just walk until we find a random spot to eat at. I used to do this alot ! That’s fun to do in areas like Soho and Harlem where there’s something yummy on lke every corner.
Although I’ve lived in Ny all of my life there are so many things I don’t even know about that continue to pop up everywhere. I would be looking to do something fun like an interactive museum or a pop up spot that Is also interactive. I’m a spontaneous person so plans are cool but I love when one things just leads into a bunch of other unexpected things and that’s what I would want for who I’m hanging with!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely so in total I’ve been in the industry for 8 years. Over the years I’ve met so many people who have put me in positions to further myself. Although overall I am so used to submitting myself to most of the projects I’ve worked and putting myself out there, there are so many significant colleagues of mine that I could do none of this without.
First and foremost one of my beauty mentors who taught me and also worked in the field with me, Maria Brown, God rest her soul
It still feels so weird to say that! She always was and would be so proud of where I’ve come.
As of recent, the past 2 to 3 years I have gone under management with I’m Next Modeling and have had significant growth in the way I go about things and my craft in general. Thank you guys for everything on a daily basis! They are family.
And seriously thank you to my online supporters and fellow colleagues nobody gets it like you do!
