We had the good fortune of connecting with TreVante Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi TreVante, why did you pursue a creative career?
Starting from the age of 11, I always viewed the world differently and I felt that God gave me a gift to give to the world.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am most proud of me being authentic and being unapologetically myself. What sets me apart from others is taking all of my musical and creative influences and infusing them into one unique sound. Starting from the age of 11, I began the independent grind and grassroots marketing in order to promote my then R&B single “Baby Girl”. “Baby Girl” went on to spend multiple weeks on several Billboard charts and eventually peaked at #1 beating out Chris Brown and Ray J. “Baby Girl” also ended up selling over 80,000 units independently. I was then signed to Geffen Records a few years later at the age of 16 and went on to have multiple videos on 106 & Park and toured around the world with the likes of Mindless Behavior, Tyga, OMG Girlz, Coco Jones, etc. After being a solo artist, I then joined an R&B group for 10 years and hit a milestone of performing on Soul Train Awards with Jacquees as well as having another Billboard top 20 R&B single under my belt. In 2023, I finally made the decision to sing for my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Contemporary Gospel. My success definitely did not come easy because it took a lot out of me mentally. I overcame my obstacles by praying, keeping my family close and staying true to myself. The lessons that I learned along the way is don’t sweat the small stuff, don’t trust everyone, and the industry is 90% business and 10% music. I want the world to know that what you see is what you get with me and I am a true fan of creativity at heart, which is my driving force in my artistry.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To start the week, I would take them downtown to view the city. I would then take them to Edgewood to experience the culture on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we would visit my favorite hibachi spot “Miyako”. On Thursday, we would hit up my favorite venue Aisle 5 for a nostalgic Y2K party. We would then end the week in the studio creating songs about the week we had.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t have the knowledge that I have without my parents. With my mom having her start at radio stations and owning her own label, she taught me about the business side of the industry. My dad taught me about the creative side of the industry because he was in a signed R&B group in the 90s and was also a songwriter.
