We had the good fortune of connecting with Tony Hightower and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tony, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Necessity. I don’t have a deal and I’m putting these records out and now I have multiple records out! Having to do it ourselves has been great, but of course we’d love to have a partnership with a major label.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe what sets me apart in jazz are my influences from so many other genres. Because of me coming from an R&B/Hip Hop background. I know it’s very different from what we expect the typical jazz singer to be, however I do think that is apart of any edge that I may have.

I’m very proud of all of my bodies of work in jazz thus far, “The New Standard” (2014), “Legacy”(2022) and my most recent Christmas project, “This Time of Year”(2022). I’m looking forward to pushing all of those projects by touring the world and showing people where I thinkI really shine which is on stage.

It started off seemingly easy, I received a record deal right out of high school, and quickly learned that there are no guarantees. My love for music/the entertainment industry has kept me going, I haven’t even scratched the surface as to what God has planned for me to do.

I’ve over come challenges through God, the love of my family & friends, and through my love of music.

I would like the world to know that I am authentically myself in whatever I am doing. I am a Gemini so I am many things. As for my brand, I hope people draw that I bring a since of class, style and gentleman like behavior. I think we need more of that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LOL. This is way more than I think I am able to imagine, with that being said, I would ask my friend….” Friend, what would you like to do”? Then, I’d do just that!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My beautiful mother, the late great Theresa Hightower. Who was known as the “Jazz Blues Diva of Atlanta”. I owe my appreciation of jazz and other genres to her first and foremost.

Then I’d like to shoutout my grandmother who started it all. Her love of music transcended to my mom and then to me.

Lastly to two member of the renowned Cole Family… Mr. Nat King Cole, who was the first voice in jazz that I loved and emulated, then his brother the late great Freddy Cole, as a result of him being a great friend of my mothers, he then became my mentor in jazz.
