We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiyana Jordan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiyana, how do you think about risk?
This is where the entire essence of an entrepreneur lives— in the capability to take a risk. It’s all a risk but the idea of not taking this risk is what keeps me up at night. I think about what if I don’t send that blind email to connect, what if I don’t take my chances of sharing my services with a random person, what if I don’t invest into a certain area of my business? What if I hadn’t relocated my children and I to Atlanta where I have no intricate connections or a big family to pursue my writing career? What if, what if? But, when I think about the “what if” in the risk taking— it’s always “why not”. I’m all in when I comes to making decisions that are risky, (all within moral reasons, of course) but withoutthe risk— what’s the point of working to leverage your life.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is NINE30 Communications and Consulting. I’m a strategy writer, speechwriter, scriptwriter— needless to say my business is based on taking the thoughts, ideas, voices and stories of others and developing them into written word for their targeted audience. I absolutely love words, the way the right cadence flows, to hear them orally or read them silently to myself— it’s an art for me. I think the appreciation for language is what continues to make a better writer. To be able to listen intently and take away the most impactful pieces of a story, create a compelling tagline, or assist an executive with connecting with the culture of their company— it’s all a beautiful marriage of thoughts and words.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, NO ONE calls me for a fun time 😂 definitely not to drink or party, BUT, I do get a lot of business strategy calls, how can I do this, do that conversations. Or, can you help me write this calls. However, a perfect itinerary for me would be driving to Helen, Ga and going walk the trials to see the water falls. After, giving this answer I may need to get out more 😂
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This is so important to recognize our community and those who support us as entrepreneurs! I can honestly say there has been an amazing group of individuals that I’ve met on my course. Certainly, my aunt and grandmother, two of my elementary school English teachers— Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Johnson. My college professor, Mrs. Shanice. And my friend, Sheba! We have these “I made it” stories that we just can’t wait to document one day in a memoir or something. 🙂 But, since college she has witnessed every tier of my journey. 14 years ago we took a trip to Atlanta from New Orleans, had our printed resumes, Mapquest directions and was determined to land our dream job in the industry. Our last stop was a building we’d Googled that led us to Def Jams. We get to the door and it’s locked! As we walk off someone comes out and calls us back and we got an on the spot interview!! We drove home listening to “Made it in America” the entire way 🙂 The sacrifice stories are the best.
