We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiara Slater and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiara, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose a life of artistic endeavors because that is what I see and experience every single day…ART. Since childhood, I have taken a likeness in noticing the beauty in all things, whether it be considered good or bad, societally. I grew up admiring the way the leaves grew, changed, fell, flew, and rebirthed through the Mississippi season changes. I noticed how low the tall tees fell over baggy Girbaud jeans on the dope boys and rappers in the 2000’s. I noticed how even the elders smiled with gold teeth across the front of their mouth. The little girls baby hair swirls looped with no ending. I admired how even the old buildings stood with a lean as a badge of honor and sovereignty. I simply enjoy studying people and learning the history and world in which we evolved, especially people of color. I long for understanding, however wide the range may be. I wish to understand God and his purest intentions when creating all of this. Seeing, studying, and creating art of my own is the closest thing to that, in my opinion.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I enjoy the luxury of being able to proclaim my titles as a Fashion Designer, Wardrobe Stylist, and Artist. I truly dive into an immersive creative process while working, making it a full body experience. I have to feel spiritually and emotionally connected to my clients to understand their visions. When shooting photos and/ or filming, I sort of take on the role of the director. I believe the lighting and sound of the atmosphere is just as important as the wardrobe, as it all affects the message of the project. If the AC is blowing too hard, we have to cut it off. Joking, but seriously, my sensitivity to art and the creative process is what sets me apart from the crowd. And my discernment sets me apart from all of the sensitive artists out there. I am most proud of myself for continuously choosing to show up as Tiara Slater every single day. The journey of remembering who you are and showcasing yourself for the world to see takes bravery. When challenges arise, I pray for the armor of God to protect me and the strength to carry on. Yes, prayer still works and it still changes things!
I want the world to know that we are all individual designers of our lives in some way. Think of me as the middle man…or woman. I am just here to help you transform your story into something tangible, an outfit or ensemble that speaks to your identity, character, and soul directly.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I am ever responsible for showing anyone the best time in the city of Atlanta, we would be in for a festive week of fun, as well as, relaxation, because, you know, balance, its important. We would start the week off gently with a nice brunch at Snooze off Howell Mill rd sipping on a good ol’ espresso martini. After, we would head over to take stroll through Little Five Points for some shopping or spontaneous tattoos. Given the location, we would sit for a late lunch at Hattie B’s Hot Chicken off Moreland avenue. As night falls, we will end our day at any of the Cru lounges around town to enjoy a drink and hookah for Free Hookah Monday’s. Tuesday, we will head over to La Botana, a local Mexican restaurant in Dunwoody, for tacos. While on that side of town, we will stop by Treat your Feet for an hour long massage, followed by a partybike bicycle tour to show off the city at sunset. Kayaking down the Chattahoochee river in Cobb County will start our Wednesday outdoors. We will end the evening sipping wine and vibing for R&B night at PUR Zen Wine Bar just off the edge of Mcdonough. Yes, I love to hit the hot spots at each corner of Atlanta and its outskirts. Thursday night, we will start the weekend at Moondogs in Buckhead for some bar Karaoke. Fridays are for free comedy nights at Suite Lounge. We saved our energy and appetite for Rumor’s strip club wings on Saturday. After a long week of balanced fun, we will rest and rejuvenate with a picnic at Piedmont park while also enjoying our portable to-go hookahs from Hookah Hose ATL.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out my counselor and therapist of years ago, Nore Gjolaj, PhD, for encouraging me to give myself permission to be who I desire to be in this world regardless of what anyone else my think of me or wish from me.
