We had the good fortune of connecting with Thuy Tran and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Thuy, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I wouldn’t call it a career, perhaps a lifestyle and passion. Creating art is powerful, it’s a beautiful way to explore yourself and the world around you. I decided to pursue art because it’s the sense of belonging I never had. Being an outcast in a world so dull, art helped me see life in color. I instantly fell in love with the colors around me, acknowledging that the world cannot run without art. So I create my art to show the world, that life can be as vibrant as you allow it to be.
“If you are a gifted person, it doesn’t mean that you gained something. It means you have something to give back.”
― Carl Jung
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a Vietnamese-American artist born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. My influences come from the love I have for other cultures’ music, fashion, art, film, and lifestyle. With direct influence from it, I visualize the colors I see/feel and manifest them into my artwork. Pursuing a creative career takes a lot of courage and confidence, you have to be rebellious against social norms and own who you are. No matter who or what is in your ear, listen to your heart and move with it.
I want the world to look at my art and let their guard down.
Many suppressed traumas carry unconsciously into adulthood, hindering many from embracing their inner child. We tend to forget that our “youthfulness” never dies; it’s still in us but manifested differently. Learn to love your inner demons, Embrace your inner child, and Become friends with them. Let’s be Friends.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would recommend visiting the High Museum of Art or the Line of awesome art galleries located at Miami Circle, my favorite art gallery being Johnson Lowe Gallery.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shout-out to my favorite artist Yoshitomo Nara. After viewing his exhibition for LACMA it influenced me to take my imagination to new heights. Yoshitomo Nara taught me to embrace my inner child and to be free. Thank you for showing the world your beautiful work, my craft wouldn’t evolve without you.
YOSHITOMO NARA, YOU ROCK!
