We had the good fortune of connecting with Terran Dampier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Terran, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting TuShea Natural Home & Body was two fold. On one side I started my business as a need. Many and my family and friends suffered from dry skin. So in starting my business I wanted to create products that would help transform their skin. On the other side I wanted to create luxury skin care products with basic ingredients. I feel like everyone should have access to hand crafted luxury skin care items without breaking their budget. Its also just very rewarding to get feedback from return clients on how my products helped their skin.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is TuShea Natural Home & Body. I create natural skin care products as well as candles and totes. Another part of my business is Whip & Sip, an interactive self care class where you learn and create your own whipped body butter. I believe this is what sets me apart from other skincare lines. The experience is an instructor led class that includes all the ingredients and equipment needed for you to whip your shea butter as well as cocktails and snacks, because whats a party without snacks!
The goal for Whip & Sip was not only to give people a break to do something completely different and fun but it’s also empowering people to be able to create their own skincare products if they ever need to.
I got to where I am today by being diligent and constantly in creative mode. When you run a business 100% on you own it’s definitely never easy. I’m constantly researching and reading about herbs and oils, combining essential oils, creating social media content, filling orders and booking Whip & Sip parties. So I would say my challenge will always be balance. I feel like the way that I overcome that is being intentional with my time so that Im not overwhelmed and bombarded with “to-do’s.”
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to make a plan but keep it as a living document. What I mean is if there’s a goal you want to reach create a detailed plan but allow space for plans to change or grow. Another lesson I learned is take time for you. As business owners we commit our lives to our craft and sometimes lose sight of ourselves. Being in the self care industry its still something that I have to be mindful of for myself. Practice what you preach!
I want people to remember my brand as the brand that has amazing products created with hands and heart that really care about your self care.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Additional credit and recognition would have to go to my family and friends. Throughout this journey they have supported me and encouraged me to keep going even when its a struggle. They know my why and hold me accountable.
