We had the good fortune of connecting with Teddy Axel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Teddy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to make something that stands out as far as eye catching. I also created my business name during the Obama era. It seemed more social injustice in the black communities was at a peak then. So I created “Black Religion” for the purpose and honor of the innocent the world seen killed in a act of injustice.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I moved to Atlanta in 2010. The year of the highest recession rate in ATL history I do believe. Getting adjusted wasn’t to difficult, I had a clean slate and a vision. I didn’t have any family dynamics here being from Texas…that was very difficult. One thing I learned here you have to hustle just to get in the field of your choice. Once your in, the work becomes twice as hard. I definitely struggled financially. Lessons I learned were, it’s your vision and everyone will not see your vision. That leads to a lack of support by people you never expected who you’ll cross oceans for. Painful lessons. That’s where I needed to be so I can drop and look up and call on a higher power. I realized I’m not in control. I’m just in control of my actions. My brand isn’t political at all, it stands for power within. I’m saying look we can entertain without killing and still get paid. I chose to practice not preach.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely a laid back lounge. Clubbing is not really it but a good Jamaican club periodically is a go. Sport bars like Docs in Marietta and definitely a comedy club. All those places you can eat at. Real lo-key. Everything has to be a vibe with me.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My aunt Kay. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t know anything about music , fashion, and arts. She literally molded me for entertainment purposes. Definitely her.
