We had the good fortune of connecting with Tecoiyah Desmuke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tecoiyah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’m a person who hates to be micro managed. There’s nothing wrong with havi my a 9-5. I actually work part time at a bar because it brings me excitement and different scenery. I never thought I would be an entrepreneur. I was that kid that had no idea who I wanted to be when I grew up and just went to college and wasted thousands of dollars because I was literally old that I should go lol. I found my passion in beauty and making women feel beautiful and from there I dabbled into makeup and then microblading. I realized it was my passion and I’m good at it. So obviously “let’s monetize this!” That was my thought process. I believe everyone should do what they love and be able to make a living from it. So that’s the motto for 2022 “LETS MONETIZE IT!”
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m still not where I want to be because there’s levels to everything and I want more constantly. You will never be perfect and can always improve. I think what sets me apart from other artist who do what I do is that for one doing this on darker skin is so much more difficult because our skin is so resistant and doesn’t take the pigment as easy as someone who is lighter complexion. So women will literally come to me because of that experience with darker skin. I practice and study so that I’m more knowledgeable and this helps me to overcome my obstacles in the business. I’m learning to be patient with myself but also to push myself when I don’t feel like it because it’s going to always pay off in the end. Just PUSH! I want the world to know that Nubian Aesthetics will only continue to grow and help other up and coming brow artist/estheticians advance in life as well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting me, I’d have to start off the trip with a island tour. It’s a huge circle around the island and you get to see some great views! There’s a lot of hidden gems in hawai’i! I’m still finding them myself. I’d have to take them up to North shore and kahuku to the food trucks. It’s the best experience ever. Food trucks might be favorite places to eat on island because the food is made with more preciseness in my opinion. There’s a lot of hikes on Oahu, so we would have to check out the pillbox hikes, koko head! The beaches are by far the best! I love spending time at ko olina for chill days but to really beach I love going to Waianae. The people here are exciting and loving, but you have to respect their culture and island way of life and just be respectful, as you should anywhere.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have a great amount of support from my family here in Hawaii; mom, brie and DK. Especially my sister, she always goes out of her way to help us and never complains. I owe her big time, and as far as motivation goes, my little ones encourage me to go harder in every way. When I don’t want to do it for me, I’m definitely doing it for them. I never wanted to use daycare facilities so that drove me to be able to stay at home with them and also make money and provide at the same time.
