We had the good fortune of connecting with Tasj-Mari Myers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tasj-Mari, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is everything in my career. Each time I decide to invest in my business, whether it be time or money, it is a decision to go against the grain and pave my own path. It’s far more comfortable to have a traditional job with a fixed income, but being an entrepreneur and doing photography is my passion. If I hadn’t taken a leap of faith, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love to play with bold colors, leading lines and dynamic poses. I take inspiration from both vintage and modern photography styles. It’s taken some time to develop my style, and I’m most proud of my progress in the last few years. I was actually looking at my work recently and my old folders that were labeled “portfolio” – so funny to compare what I thought was my best work to my current projects. I’m excited to see where the next year takes me. Each month has new challenges in terms of balancing being an artist with being an accountable business owner with clear systems and customer service. It’s been important for me to take advice from those ahead of me and continue to be a student. Moving forward, I’ve got some new projects that I’m working on that I can’t wait to share with everyone. I’m delving into my passions of videography and set building. My team and I are working on a new magazine called Orca and the release date is Nov 11th, and we are having a release party at Urban Outfitters on Ponce. I’m finally at a place where I can dive deeper into conceptual and artistic photography, which is where I always wanted to be. I want to be able to not only showcase people and their personalities, but abstract ideas and real world topics in symbolic imagery.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For breakfast we absolutely have to hit up the one and only Majestic Diner , where I most likely will be getting a tuna melt on rye but they have all the great classics and more. Then since we are in the area, we can walk along the beltline, look at street art and people watch. If we want to grab a bite to eat for dinner we could stop inside Ponce City Market and get some delicious ramen at Ton Ton. The next day we can ride the Marta train to Inman Park/Reynolds town and take a walk through Little Five Points – starting our shopping spree at Rag O Rama. Once our feet are tired, we can duck into Ali Baba and have some great Mediterranean food and a cold drink. After we’ve had some rest and recovered from our food coma, we can go out and experience the underground music and art scene. There are so many late shows throughout the week of up and coming artists from different music genres. We could head to Cosmic Nine Art Gallery and attend a listening party. There we can listen to Kiss Meta, Ket Faery, Rogerego, Ol!m, Cacy Badman, and Robb Williams , Djed and hosted by DJ Madd. It’s a great time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to say thank you to my all my creative circles. Shout out to Cosmic Nine Art Gallery and the family I have built there. I’m thankful for being able to set up studio and have had a place to let my ideas take physical form. Thank you to the Atlanta Shooters network and my close photography friends. I’m also super excited to be working on the start up Orca Magazine alongside Cacy Badman, Robb Williams, Dani Barcoss and Malena Dickson.
