We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanya Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tanya, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Cealle Creative began as a passion project, I initially sought out to utilize my talents as a self-taught artist and poignant storyteller to honor my grandmother by depicting stories from her life in the South.

One afternoon I decided to take a few still life images near my grandmothers home as well as a few of my grandmother. Around the same time I also started documenting stories my grandmother shared about growing up in Alabama. Once back in NY, I found myself going through pictures and replaying the stories my grandmother shared. It was in that moment in time, something magical happened. An idea formalized clearly, and Cealle was born!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a self-taught artist who has always loved being creative. My mother was my first beauty & fashion icon. however, it was during the mid 80’s, that I learned of “The Fashion Industry”. I was inspired to design women’s apparel after reading an article about American Designer Issac Mizrahi in The New Yorker Magazine. That article forever changed my life. The experience would ultimately help define my life’s purpose, and that is, to create “Beautiful Things”.

I’ve worked in the fashion industry for over twenty-five years. I have a strong fashion sense and a creative eye. I have exceptional and diverse skills that cross over various categories of fashion. Cealle is my second business venture, I successfully owned and operated a women’s boutique, The Powderoom in Pelham, Westchester. Over the years, I’ve acquired a strong professional networking circle consisting of past clientele, colleagues, and major global industry leaders.

What’s been challenging I’d say is “sometimes” because I’m not a classically trained artist/designer I doubt myself. I constantly rethink or down play my hands on life experiences. Experiences that are priceless and have been the source for my “Audacity”

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m born and raised in New York City and after years of living in NY. I found an oasis in the Bronx a few Years ago.- Wave Hill on the Hudson River.

I’ve also recently found a favorite new eatery nestled in the Inwood area of the Bronx. I’m sorry this cannot be shared it’s just too special. If you know you know.

But when I’m looking for a feeling of home, I retreat to Harlem and go to a favorite – Melba’s Southern Restaurant. And to balance things off, I like to finish with a walk thru Central Park, which is somewhat feet away…

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother was my first beauty & fashion icon. As a child I’d watch my mother intently as she would dress for work every morning. Every brush of her hair, stroke of her lip stick, blush and eye shadow. I’d observe how slowly she pulled her pantyhose up and how effortlessly clothes seem to fit her silhouette. What captivated me the most was the attention she’d get. When we’d walk down the street she’d literally stop men and women in their steps. Between that coca-cola bottle shape and smile, she was an Icon in my mind.
