We had the good fortune of connecting with Talaina Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Talaina, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
The end goal extends far beyond just me and Chosen Skin. Having dealt with my own eczema, I understood that modern medicine and prescribed steroid treatments were mere band-aids for my problem. My specific issue with eczema affected not just my body but my mind and soul as well. As a young African-American chemist, I realize that I can use my knowledge, personal experience, and vision to create change for the future.

While earning my biomedical degree, I saw that there is a gap between research and real-life problems, especially within the African-American community. Therefore, my first mission is to gather more research within this community, focusing on skin issues like eczema, psoriasis, and acne. We aim to become a trusted brand, and this research is crucial because it will inform the development of our products, ensuring they are effective and tailored to the unique needs of our community.

Our second mission is to build a community locally in Atlanta, nationally across the United States, and globally in Africa, with a special focus on Nigeria and South Africa. We’ll leverage the rich natural resources from all over the world—think butters, oils, and herbs—to craft sustainable products. But it’s not just about sourcing; it’s about reciprocity. We’re committed to fair trade, ensuring benefits like healthcare check-ups, access to clean water, and education initiatives, including school construction, for the communities we partner with. Through this, we not only contribute to local economies but also foster growth and development both abroad and at home.

Our third mission is to create a space where Chosen Skin is more than skincare but also offers sustainable solutions for long-term wellness. We will focus on comprehensive wellness solutions, creating confidence within the beauty community and helping individuals feel chosen in their skin through mind, body, and soul. Ultimately, our goal is to leave a lasting impact, not just on skin health, but on communities and economies worldwide.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career is rooted in personal experiences and a commitment to making a difference. What sets me apart is my holistic approach to addressing skin health and my deep understanding of the mental health impact of skin conditions like eczema, acne, and psoriasis. Therefore, I have created a brand that not only offers effective skincare solutions but also integrates wellness services that reflect my personal healing journey and those of others like me.

One of my proudest achievements is earning my biomedical degree. It was challenging and took six years, but I persevered. Alongside my educational path, I developed a brand and never gave up on either, even while working full-time 9-to-5 jobs. I’ve overcome these hurdles through resilience, perseverance, and a relentless focus on my vision. My journey hasn’t been easy; I’ve faced challenges, including skepticism from the industry and navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship.

Throughout my career, I’ve learned the importance of staying true to my values, embracing innovation, and fostering genuine connections with my community. I want the world to know that Chosen Skin is more than just a skincare brand—it’s a symbol of empowerment, confidence, and self-care. My story is a testament to the transformative power of holistic wellness and the belief that everyone deserves to feel chosen within their skin.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta offers a plethora of experiences, from its vibrant nature to its diverse population. Here’s the perfect week-long itinerary:

Day 1: Start at Piedmont Park, a huge park where you can encounter a variety of characters, each with their unique charm. We’ll have a lovely picnic and enjoy the Georgia heat, setting the tone for the rest of the trip.

Day 2: Explore the Beltline, a hotspot with endless activities and walking trails. The Hideaway at Baxter will be our go-to for drinks and music, ensuring a memorable time. For a health-conscious meal, Planta offers delicious plant-based food, signature cocktails, and great vibes. While walking on the Beltline, we’ll explore Little Five Points and go shopping for cute outfits for the next day. We’ll also visit Sevenanda, a health-conscious market, to pick up ingredients for a home-cooked meal.

Day 3: Rest in the morning and early afternoon. Then, we’ll get ready for a night out on the town. For a taste of Atlanta’s nightlife, Buckhead is the place to be. We’ll start at Spaceman, a rooftop bar with stunning city views, then head to MCK Restaurant and Bar for post-party munchies. If we’re in the mood for karaoke and dancing, Moondog will be our destination.

Day 4: Start the day with brunch at First Watch. Later, unwind at Woodhouse Spa in the city, enjoying relaxation and rejuvenation. End the day with a delicious southern meal at Mary Mac’s Tea Room, which will leave us with a satisfying “itis” and a good night’s sleep.

Days 5 and 6: For outdoor adventures, we’ll venture to North Georgia or the outskirts. At SOOFAH Ranch in Winston, GA, we’ll go horseback riding and experience the beauty of a black-owned horse ranch. The next day, we’ll visit Southern Belle Farm for strawberry picking or explore a lavender farm in Ranger, GA, adding a touch of tranquility to our itinerary.

With this diverse range of experiences, we’ll ensure a week-long trip filled with fun, excitement, and unforgettable memories.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to start by giving a shoutout to my mom. Without her support and the space she’s provided me to run my business from her home, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Her encouragement has been an invaluable blessing and has fueled my journey in pursuing my creative endeavors.

Additionally, I’d like to extend my gratitude to the “Her Pro Bono” program, powered by Walmart in collaboration with Our Village United. This initiative has been instrumental in helping me recognize and address the essential needs within my business. As a creative individual, I sometimes overlook the pragmatic aspects, but this program has provided invaluable guidance in developing a more balanced approach. So, a big thank you once again to my mom and the Her Pro Bono program for their support and mentorship.
