We had the good fortune of connecting with TAE RIM KIM and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi TAE RIM, why did you pursue a creative career?
Above all, I have enjoyed drawing and painting since I was young. And every time I see paintings and artistic works, they always makes me moved and gravitate to something that can’t be explainable. Art is expressed depending on their personality, cultures, and environment. The way people express character, they reflect their own values and outlook that we can’t see from the world in person. In this aspect, making art is meaningful to me in terms of transmitting impression to people. Art can inspire and motivate their life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My paintings explore the fleeting essence of “Geumho San,” the Seoul slums in South Korea where I grew up, which now linger as ephemeral landscapes in collective memory. These places, created amidst the struggle post-Korean War and Japan’s departure in 1945, are a testament to the yearning for a bright future. Through oil paints, I render the tactile quality of these memories, with complex structures now blurred and colors muted by the passage of time. With a raw immediacy and tenderness, I loose brushstrokes to create unstability of my retrospect and build up geometry shapes of flat plane come out to me intensive.
It is hard to find their own artistic language and conception. It is not easy but I would say just keep doing what you pursue in art and not only look around lots of arts but also bring out your thoughts and experience. As an artist, I want my art to be the forever platform where all people’s voices can be heard and understood and where the audience together with our community can practice mindfulness.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Everywhere in New York. New York is wonderful city. There are lots of landmarks, activities, and restaurants such as Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, etc. Also, New York has strong personality such as freedom and diverse cultures that can’t see somewhere else. If my friend visit New York, first of all, I want to show landmark, Statue of liberty. When the night falls, we will definitely visit Times Square and enjoy spectacular LED screen. Most of all, I want to show my friends galleries and museums. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and The Guggenheim Museum that we can check for not only all the history of art but also contemporary art tendency.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, thanks to my family. They are always rooting for me behind the scenes.

Second, my master colleagues in School of Visual Arts. We interact a lot through communication about art.

Third, my professors in undergraduate and graduate school. They have been supportive to offer information for us.
