We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydni Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sydni, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
This career path allows me to be free. I have many talents under the creative umbrella and i use them all to express myself and to connect with others. I have realized that through my gifts I have the ability to uplift, encourage, and inspire so many people and I know that in order to keep doing that, I must share what is brewing inside me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I was in the third grade, I said that I wanted to be a singer, dancer, and famous movie star around the world. When I was about 6 years old, I got my first video camera. I would use it to make movies starring my dolls and stuffed animals, or I would pretend to be on the news. I would also capture everything that was going on around me; family, friends, and a keen interest in nature. In school, I would always ask if I could make a video as an option for a project and would eagerly jump into directing and editing. I grew up in athletics and tried just about every sport, playing soccer for 14 years while also being involved in the singing and dancing communities on and off. For so long, I tried to fit myself into one box and choose one thing because that was what people told me to do. Whenever I tried to do that, something didn’t sit right with me. I knew deep down; I was more than just that one thing. When I first got to college, I didn’t want to have anything to do with the music, English, or art world. I thought I wanted to be an anesthesiologist, marketing manager, or possibly a psychologist. I “did a full 180” my sophomore year and decided to choose a degree in creative writing with minors in music and theater. Little did I know that would end up being one of the best decisions of my life. This path was filled with all things that I never planned on pursuing, but when I look back, those skills and interests were always there; I just never intentionally tapped into them. Oh, but when I did, I was set free into the creative world and created these amazing works that I had no clue I had the ability to do. By my senior year, I was given the title “The Form Queen,” which alluded to my tendency to throw the words all over the page in fun and interesting ways to convey better the story I was trying to tell. It was through this degree that I realized I wanted to be a screenwriter. I realized that many stories I had written were really screenplays in the making they just needed a little re-formatting. So far, I have written a script for a feature film and a short film. I was able to direct and write my first short film, “In the Blink of an Eye,” and it was amazing to see the words on the page come to life. Along with this degree being in the Atlanta area allowed me to pursue my dream of becoming an actress. I played soccer for 14 years, and it took up pretty much all my time. About 2 years ago now, a whisper in the back of my head told me to “try acting” I tried really hard to ignore it because I was scared. I had no formal experience in the acting world, and I had no clue where to start, but I also knew it was something that I really wanted to try. I decided to listen to that whisper, and that was when everything really changed for me. I took huge leaps of faith trying acting, modeling, directing, and just whatever the heck it was that I wanted to try, and I discovered new talents, made new friends, and really proved to myself that I could do whatever I put my mind to. For so long, I avoided and dismissed my calling as a creative because of fear, doubt, and insecurity. I’m not saying I don’t have those feelings now. They are still there, but I don’t let them stop me. I stopped trying to force myself to be just one thing but instead embraced that I am all those things and more. I know that I have a lot to share with the world and will continue to grow and share as I make my way through my journey.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The City of Decatur is a fun spot with lots of restaurants and cool places to hang out. Back in the day, I would take you to Steelcity Pops, but unfortunately, they had to close down. I really love to drive so honestly I would love to take someone on a drive-in and around Downtown Atlanta. I really enjoy the view from the top of the parking deck at the Georgia Aquarium, and of course, as someone who is in the film industry I absolutely love going to the Starlight Drive-In it is such a cool experience and really great all year-round. I also love to dance so I would definitely take my friend to a fun heels and hip hop class at Dance 101. I’m not a huge foodie, but from time to time I do enjoy a good turkey burger and Grindhouse is a really great spot for that.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to all of my friends, family, peers, and professors who have always believed in me and have always encouraged me to be myself and to embrace my talents, and use them to the best of my ability. I’d also like to shoutout my school Agnes Scott for providing an environment for me to grow, learn, and become the woman I am today.
