We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacquell Green aka Stylist Bella J and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stylist Bella J, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process in starting my own business was that there are women out here who truly struggle with finding their own fashion sense and creating a signature look. However, I love fashion and could help others do embrace it so easily. People actually wanted to pay me for something I loved to do. That is when I decided to turn my passion into a business.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a creative, particularly in fashion styling. I love to pull the pieces of an outfit together to help my clients achieve their signature style and look. Wardrobe styling and personal shopping comes to me pretty effortlessly. I will work tirelessly searching for the perfect pieces to complete my client’s event and wardrobe needs. That is what sets me apart from others. I do not stop until the look is complete. I’m most excited about the current landscape of fashion. There are many talented, up and coming designers bringing a fresh perspective to the fashion industry and that helps me to curate stylish looks for my clients. It was not easy for me to get where I am today, it took perseverance and passion. In the beginning, I wondered what I could bring to the style industry that didn’t already exist. Today, I see that my talent is unique and invaluable to the industry. I looked to my sister circle and family for the push to stick with it. I’ve learned that the most important thing is to get started. I learned to get out of my own head and get out of my own way, to let my work speak for itself. It is my desire to help people find the confidence they need through their wardrobe, to walk out of the door powerfully every day no matter the destination. I want to help people embrace that their style is an outward expression of who they truly are on the inside. I want the world to know that whatever your style is, own it! That is the Stylist Bella J brand. That is my story.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the area and I wanted to show her the best time ever, I’d take her to Center City DC and Clarksburg Premium Outlets, of course for shopping. We would track down some of the city’s most sought after food trucks like The Cracked Eggery and The Roaming Rooster. I would take my best friend to one of the hottest bakeries in town, Sugar Vault Desserts. A trip to the National Museum of African American History and Culture would be a must. We would hang out at the National Harbor and find some local events to take in, comedy shows or concerts in town at the time. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my sister circle. This circle includes my biological sisters along with my best friends who have grown to be like sisters over the years. These women pushed me to share my gift with the world. My sister circle encouraged me to pursue my styling business and have continually supported my dream.
