We had the good fortune of connecting with Stevie Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stevie, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m born and raised from Greensboro, NC “336”. My parents started me early in music. I started playing the drums early a the age of 3 and shortly afterwards, I started playing drums for my church all throughout my youth and college years. This started everything..being from Greensboro, I was able to close to North Carolina A&T and see how important it was to make an impact in the community as a black man being surrounded by many great people who looked like myself.
Being from a smaller city like Greensboro also motivated me to create something out of myself. I made it my mission ever since leaving Greensboro to put the work in so I could give back to the city and to those who were a huge impact to me and I used that drive in everything I do now. Being apart of the church taught me everything I know about family and why it is important. These are the people who were always around and still is to this day. It made me realize what is truly important. You can make all the money in the world but it don’t mean anything if you’re not able to give back to those who helped you along the way. My father used music and the church as a way to teach my discipline and work ethic. Without having the responsibility of going to practices, attending church, family events, etc. I wouldn’t be consistent at all but one thing it did teach me is to finish what ever I start and to be a man of my word which is vital in everything I do.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
During the day, I am a Sales Engineer at IBM and at nights I am a composer and 1/2 of StēvKob Studios and we are a music studio that provides mixing and mastering services along with production work for artist and films. We touch every genre with the primary focus being hip hop and we aim to help artist develop their music to its full potential. I’m most proud about the pop-up session we had last year bringing over 25 different artist from all over the US including Atlanta, NY, LA, Chicago, Minnesota and more to create a 10 track EP all in 1 weekend. There was so many different types of artist but we were able to bring everyone together and create something very special from it. The project is projected to be released at the end of the Summer this year. When it comes to where I am today, it’s all from people. I’ve had the opportunity of working on so many film projects like The Pros of Cons, Kesler, Break it to me Gently, Little Drummer Boy and Good Grief just through meeting dope individuals who I could relate to. They mentioned they were creating projects and that eventually lead to where these projects are today and the same goes for all of the production and mixing work we’ve had the opportunity of working on. This taught us that its all about who you work with and don’t settle for things or projects that are not aligned to your vision. As long you are helping others and being yourself, that speaks volumes and the rest will work itself out. I want the world to know that we are just 2 cool dudes who want to create dope music and work on dope projects. Not only that, we want to challenge ourselves and bring out the best in you as a artist or creative and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In ATL, I’d tell them to check out first Bartaco to get a duck bowl for Lunch and then head to ponce city market for the views and vibes on the rooftop. After that, go to Piedmont Park to read a book and enjoy nature…if you really about it, I’d go to the Bamboo Forest in Sandy Springs. Latest, what I’ll do is finish the night at Black Coffee ATL and peep one of their open mics. If in Chicago, too many to list! I would start with the Hampton Social or Etta for brunch, then maybe catch a chicago bulls game during the day. Catch a concert at any venue really and then finish the night at your crib door dashing Harold’s…specifically Lemon Pepper Hot..you will not regret. You could also check out our studio in Ravenswood if you find yourself in the area.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First I dedicate this shoutout series to my father and mother, without them I wouldn’t be who I am today. Without them who knows where or who I would be. Ever since a kid they always instilled in me good traits, morals and spirit and that helped me discover who I was and what I like to do. They guided me in becoming aN engineer and in result I was able to do what seemed like the impossible so far in my career. They were and still is always there for anytime and need and I am appreciative of it. Secondly, I owe it to Symplicity Productions, without these boys, I wouldn’t have the confidence to explore my creative side. They have been amazing friends and supporters along the way and that will never change. Lastly, I want to shoutout my Chicago crew and you know who you are. When I first moved to Chicago, I was ready to give up, these people keep me going and showed me the other side to things. With them I’m able to discover new things about myself everyday while having fun doing it.
