We had the good fortune of connecting with Skyla Heard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Skyla, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In high school I had multiple business ideas. At the time I didn’t have the best support system, I also didn’t think I would be able to balance school and a business. I started of by doing other people hair on campus as a side hustle. I always wanted to sell hair but I didn’t have the resources. The first vendor I saw I snatched without doing any research and on June 1st , 2021 Savvy Beautee LLC was launched. EPIC FAIL. I had so many customers but my time management, inventory, shipping , etc was all over the place. I shut the whole site down for 8 months ! 8 months of research and planning!! I didn’t have a time frame I just told myself “I will relaunch when I’m ready”. I built my own website, logos, marketing flyers, LITERALLY everything is all by me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been through alot mentally, physically, and emotionally within the past year. Without those challenges I wouldn’t be where I am professionally. It was extremely difficult. I became depressed not leaving the house, cutting everyone important out of my life, along with losing my biggest supporter, I completely shut down. I had to learn to be patient,Time is healing. I don’t know how I did it but over time I became better. I’m still not completely there yet but I’m closer than ever. Im currently a student and hair stylist. I decided to take a gap year from Georgia state university to enroll into Paul Mitchell The School to become a master cosmetologist furthering my career in the beauty field. I also plan on launching a nonprofit mental health organization sometime this year.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Shoutout to pacific rim bistro, that’s my favorite place in Atlanta to eat. Im still mad about them taking crab rangoon of the menu, but the sushi and fried rice is great. I’m a sightseeing person and little five points is one of my favorite places to visit. I know everyone probably been there but my first time going was in February. I knew nothing about it.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Great Grandmother was always my #1 supporter. She was the only one I could be completely honest with about my plans and my future. Her prayers got me threw all the battles. Her prayers saved me. She always told me “Do what makes you happy!”. I would like to send a message to heaven,
Thank you boo baby for always believing in me and never losing faith in me. I know you watching over me , I LOVE YOU!
Thanks to my family, my boyfriend, and his family.
