We had the good fortune of connecting with Shonda Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shonda, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think of taking risks as a must! I took a risk when I started my business. I took a risk when I sold everything out of my apartment in Mississippi and relocated to Atlanta without a single plan! It wasn’t easy by far but it was the best risk that I have taken!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
A close friend of mine passed away. I fell into depression quick. I didn’t want to be here anymore. I went to work and straight home and slept until the next day for months. Someone who I can now call my mentor encouraged me to GET UP! Shelia took me to a farmers market and pointed out old items that could be refurbished or painted. I instantly fell in love with painting old dressers or anything I could get my hands on. I went to Michaels one day and purchased canvas. I painted all day everyday and the paintings were actually hideous but it brought me out of depression. From there I began painting with my friends and thought it would be a great idea to travel and let others enjoy it as much as I did. That’s when Sipp and Paint began, I hosted my first party in New Orleans, La.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely have to recommend Ponce City Market! A few other places for a great experience are Slutty Vegan, Krab Queens (because I love seafood & daiquiris), BQE which is an entire experience to eat, drink, & hangout! Negril’s Village for brunch! Nawlins Praline Candy & More for snowballs & gumbo!!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a shout out to The Most High. Without God being within me, I know I wouldn’t be here today!

Also, my mentor Shelia Williams. Thank you for being there for me when I was at my lowest and welcoming me into your life as if I was your own! You sparked a fire in me and that light hasn’t went out yet!
