We had the good fortune of connecting with Shavonda Kidd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shavonda, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Well for Me giving up is not an option. I have been a fighter since birth, life in general is hard and I figure if I managed to live all these years with trials and tribulations that I have been given, then fighting for My music to be heard is easy.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My story is wild and crazy, I was actually a CDL driver for public transportation, because I figured it would be easy and I could go to law school and not have anything stressful, so I could earn money and study. Well life happens I was in an accident injured, got a Masters in Human Right’s Law, got fired because I can no longer work. So while I was out of work waiting to return I wrote a 129 page script, I attempted to film a short of another script right before COVID, which the noise in the background was loud and horrible, so to make a trailer, I taught my self how to edit the scene clips on Final Cut Pro. Well I needed music in the background but due to intellectual property laws, I could not use commercial music for a trailer or promo without permission. One day I started teaching myself to create sounds with loops already on the computer. As time went on I started to purchase sound clips, and loops. After COVID My oldest daughter passed away from complications of COVID. My music is what kept me somewhat sane. I purchased a Jazz Bass guitar, took lessons for three months, and now I play some of the music I create. I did one open mic night at a club called Fusions in College Park, but by the time I was up half the people was gone, I still performed and actually enjoyed myself. I said I was going to keep going but, I haven’t been back yet, I have 23 songs written and working on the recordings. I just put together CD number three and it should be out in about six weeks, it’s called Bayou Country Queen, and sold 3 physical CD’s all ready. I’m excited to be on this new journey. I started Blue Money Production and Entertainment llc. to protect my writing and my children’s music, I/Blue Money Production and Entertainment llc. own the Masters of all of our music and scripts. My music can be heard on several music platforms, apps and websites.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I like going to Monticello’s in Marietta on Friday’s, I haven’t been there in a while, so I have been going a lil closer to home to Back Stage in College Park. I usually stop by on a Thursday with my friends. On some Sunday’s we might stop in at Grown Folks and cross over to the Smoke Room the music is much better there. I think Back Stage has hired a new DJ because the music and the MC was better last week when we went. My sister is coming in from California for the holidays so we reserved a table at Back Stage. I will also take her probably to The Battery, it reminds me of the French Quarters, with all the people walking around, the live music and food.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Well for Me it’s My children that support Me. Although life has given me some drastic turns my children have always been there to listen to the crazy and not so crazy beats I compose, the noise at 1 or 2 am. They also keep me grounded especially the youngest son, he will let me know, momma that don’t sound right the tempo may be off or the sound from the loud bass is distorted. I went from being Mom to Musician. As far as encouragement it’s from my up bringing My parents said there is nothing in this world you can not learn or do and they were absolutely correct. Because I’m into music the groups that have inspired me to create the sounds that I create is Jazz musician Herbie Hancock, Kenny G, Louis Armstrong and several others, in hip hop it was Timberland, when Missy Elliott came out that music was different and I liked those beats, still do.
