We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Barron and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shannon, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my business and the success of my brand is staying true to myself. With so many paint and sip concept companies out today, I have learned to stick to art and vibes that make me happy. I am naturally drawn to black art and I use my creative time as a way to relax and unwind. There was a time when I thought my preferences would limit my reach and my clientele. However, it has been quite the opposite. There is a current trend where many paint and sip companies provide a “trap and paint” experience. Guests listen to upbeat, up to date dance music which provides a fun party type vibe. While this style of artistry is needed and is popular, it is just not my thing. Instead of conforming to what is trending, I decided to stay true to myself and provide art classes that are mellow, relaxing and low key. For that reason, my customer base is comprised mainly of women that are looking to escape the everyday hustle and stresses of life. They are looking for a chilled out environment that allows them to take a pause and rejuvenate while fostering their creativity. Just. Like. Me. When I create art and an experience that speak to my spirit, I attract customers that “speak’ my same language. I have learned there is space for all of us to shine. As long as I stay true to myself, my light will never be dim.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I use acrylic paint to create art. I am drawn to black art however, I love being creative and making my art reflect my personal life (natural hair, melanated skin, greek life, etc.) . I am proud that I have found a way to use what I love to do (paint) and combine it with what I was trained to do (teach) to create my very own company. My art story began by attending local paint and sip classes with my mother who also loved to paint. I fell in love. After several months of classes, I decided to invite a few friends over to teach them what I have learned. Personalized Paintings was born. From that day in 2014, I have been teaching art and loving every minute. While most of my journey has been easy, it does not come without challenges. I have missed some important family moments due to my business obligations. I have learned to manage my time and prioritize moments that I can never get back while still maintaining a successful self-run company. I want the world to know that I am in control of CREATING my destiny by making money doing something I love.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am honestly a home body, which is why the “girl’s night-in” theme of my paint parties are perfect for me. I bring the parties to my hostesses home, church or venue (currently virtually) because that is where I prefer to spend my time. So, I am not the right person to give advice on city life. I am perfectly happy eating, drinking, visiting and hanging out right at home!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My gift of “art-ing” was passed down to me from my mother (Carol L. Hagins), everything that I am is because of her. Behind every successful woman is a squad of other women cheering her on. I am grateful for the captains of my cheer squad, Dr. Renee Felton (mentor) and Patlyn Gamble (encourager). Thank you both for loving me and pushing me to reach my fullest potential.
