We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanae Cooper- Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shanae, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is my work ethic. I work in good times, bad and in between. I am afraid to say that, I don’t know when to stop working because I am a workaholic. The only time my hands, feet and mind get rest is when I am asleep. In order to be successful, you have to be willing to put your ‘shoulders to the wheels’ because there is no substitute method for success other than hard work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I am a teacher by profession, an author carved by passion, a creative enthusiast by skills (Event Planner, Pastry Chef, etc.). Additionally, I am a teacher mentor who sits on the executive body of the Mentors’ Association of Jamaica Limited. My versatility sets me apart , I wear many hats that fit. I am most proud of the impact and opportunities that my book’s message is making in society. I am so grateful to God that, my book’s title From the Root to the Fruit was used for Jamaica Day 2023. I have reached so many milestones that I really attribute to hard work, networking with the right people, having a strong family support system and being totally reliant on God’s favor and direction. I am currently a Book Reviewer for the Nonfiction Authors Association as well as a Best-selling Author of the books From the Root to the Fruit; Rising Above Adversities as well as a Christmas Planner: An Absolute Guide for Planning and Organizing Christmas Tasks.

I get to where I am today professionally because of my work ethics, resilience, faith in God and my personal drive to be my best possible self. Prior to now, it wasn’t easy, I moved pass my pain to pursue my purpose. My challenges or adversities are the bedrock of my firm foundation today. My adversities taught me the fundamental principles of life. On my path to success, I learnt many lessons to include but not limited to: learn to toot your own horn, do not take disappointments and rejections personal, every time you fall, get up and never stop trying. I want the world to know that even when the odds are severely against you, you can rise about your adversities. I am that once little girl who stemmed from the bowels of poverty, survived many challenges such as a broken home with broken people, watched my mom gone through mental illness, my sister’s wholesomeness being deprived, fourteen of us crammed in a one bed- room house, absenteeism of a father, tough love of a mother, yet still I used education as my escape route. This therefore means that, you don’t have to complain about the sourness of the limes and tamarind that life gives you, but can use them to make limeade and tamarind balls respectively.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

“Close your eyes, make a wish because tonight is the night, you’ll get shrimp and fish.” Open them now. Since you are in the breadbasket parish, turn up your appetite, fasten your seatbelt and expect to have a jolly good ride. We are heading to the heart of the parish’s capital, Black River. Do expect to get a picturesque glance at the white sandy beach nestled with the azul water. Just across from that view is the historical Waterloo Guest House where you can sip and give a little tip. Let’s go! Let’s go! With so many places to go in this one little area, I hope you don’t get place sick. We have to make this a two part visit, but we will skip some places today in order to not miss out gracing Swamp Safari with our “steam fish and okra bodies.”

On the same stretch of the sea, just across the road , there lies the navigable and one of the longest river in Jamaica, the Black River. If you are a lover of wild lives and endangered species, then you will have a great time at Safari. Buckle up your seatbelt once more, let’s go sailing in the Black River in those fancy and comfortable boats for sure. Are you afraid of crocodiles? Oh no! It will get scary for a while, until we end few miles. Enough of that for now, let’s go get something to eat. Just 3 minutes away up the street, let’s dine in fine style, you are at Las Vegas, oh snap! Not the one in America. Grab your menu, see what we have, shrimp, fish, chicken, bammy, rice& peas, cocktail, many more but no crab. The tour wouldn’t be complete without stopping at the Shrimp Country in Middle Quarters Street to indulge with those nice and peppery treats. Not very far from there, you can get cool jellies to make the hotness of the pepper disappear. If you come to St. Elizabeth and don’t do a bamboo tour (through the Holland Bamboo) that trip would be fake, invalid and one to ignore.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I hope that my shout out doesn’t deplete this space or break your record, anyways! Shout out to my amazing mother- Valrie Spence who shaped me into the well- rounded human being that I am today. I am a product of her hard work and many sacrifices made. She is one of my greatest inspirations.
