We had the good fortune of connecting with Shalanda Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shalanda, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success/the success of my brand is my husband. Throughout the week, I am juggling several hats. I am a mother to a very energetic 4-year-old, own a non-profit organization, work full-time as an educator and a front-line worker, and run two online platforms. My husband ensures that my packages are shipped out within 24-48 hours and informs me when the inventory is low, etc. His major is Business Administration; I must admit that it has been a blessing in disguise. Without the help of my husband and my faith in God, I would not be able to walk-in rooms that I reminisced about a few years back. I am thankful to be in business since December 2019. In my opinion, behind every successful brand is a village, consistency, and prayer.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In 2019, I prayed to God and asked him for guidance to up-start a business, but not just any business, a business with meaning. So many people silently battle with the day-to-day issues of life and are suffering internally. I always have people reach out to me for words of encouragement, and I try my best to give the best gems. Months elapsed, but I didn’t give up on my vision. I woke up every morning and repeated the Serenity Prayer “…to accept the things that I cannot change and wisdom to know the difference.” It was as clear as day to start a business that will uplift, inspire, and motivate others through their charms; I live for the testimonials. Even if only a few, I know that my charms saved someone either mentally, physically, or emotionally. Sereniti Jewels is more than just a jewelry business; it is near and dear to my heart.
Along with running two online platforms, I have been working as a Respiratory Therapist since 2009. I have transitioned from a staff employee and a supervisor to a Program Director of Respiratory Therapy at a Community College and an entrepreneur. As of today, I still enjoy working as needed in the hospital in this vastly evolving field. Before my grandmother transitioned, she was praising me in the hospital to everyone who was assisting in her care that I was going to be someone one day and that she was so proud of me.
I enjoy working in my field, giving back to the community, and selling my jewelry. There have been occasions when I experience burnout and fatigue. When I want to give up, I hear my sweet grandmother’s voice as clear as day and see her beautiful smile from heaven. I also hear my husband saying to me, “Straighten your crown and do not dim your light for anyone.” I have learned throughout this journey to accept help when it is extended and that it is acceptable to take a mental health break. I was doing everything myself and became overwhelmed. Throughout this journey, I have learned that you cannot be the best “You” in any area of your life if you are not well-rested and in a healthy mental space.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We will have a self-care day that will include spa treatments, etc., drive to the beach, book a neo-soul or R and B concert, book a comedy show, and reserve a winery tour. Most of all, we will have a rest day to do absolutely nothing.
We will eat seafood, soul food, American food, hibachi, sushi, steak, prime rib, and try out new restaurants.
Most of all, we will exercise at least three times that week.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
