Hi Scottlyn, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote and affirmation is “Choose Happiness”. Over the years and in business , it’s so easy to get caught up in the routine or the process which comes with an array of emotions but I learned that you get to CHOOSE your emotions . Telling myself to choose happiness when it’s convenient to choose anger , sadness , bitterness , and defeat has made all the difference in my personal life and work life . It’s a reminder that I have to focus on the bigger picture and my main goals . It helps me to stay focused and disciplined even when I want to throw it in. I still honor all of my emotions , but when I feel they are distracting me or weighing heavy , I constantly remind myself to Choose Happiness.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
So I am the owner of Waxsy Candle Company in Atlanta, Ga . With Handcrafted coconut wax candles & wax melts , room sprays and more. When I first started Waxsy in 2019 , I had no idea what to expect . I just knew it was something I enjoyed doing. From rebranding multiple times , failed deals and more , everyday in business is a lesson. Like most , I was self taught and had to learn a lot about running a business on my own all while developing personally. So imagine having to send out 10 orders in a day all while learning the value of forgiveness with people from your past (haha). For a while , I struggled with branding : finding what set me apart from other candle brands and businesses. I didn’t just want my only highlight to be I was a black owned business but for people to see that I was redefining candles AND the cherry on top was that it was a black WOMAN owned business. I’ve been through various label changes , website changes , social media changes and more but I realized the main goal was to be an affordable luxury candle company . The best part about Waxsy , is that we represent and honor all home types and personalities & can make ANY home feel like luxury. Proud to say , we have scents and something for everyone. Truth is , self care is needed for everyone , regardless of who you or your background and THAT is what sets us apart from anyone because we have created scents for anyone who just wants to feel good and wants there home to smell good all while giving luxury vibes and affordable prices. There have been so many lessons that I’ve learned in my few years of business (I should probably write a book about it) , but the main lesson is to never give up. Don’t underestimate the power of pushing through the hardest times . It shows that you are fearless , capable of anything and you can’t be defeated or stopped when things don’t go as planned. I’ve gotten this far from just getting out of my own way , trusting God & Gods plan , & keeping my head up and treating everything as a lesson , not a failure .

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well in the next few years , they can come to our flagship store and hang out haha , but in the meantime there are soooo many places to visit . Atlanta is an amazing place with things to do on every corner and the best part , a lot of these restaurants and lounges are black owned . From Edgewood to the belt line , there’s fun at every corner . My best advice is to turn your GPS off and get out there

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been so many days where the work and stress get to me and where I begin to isolate myself or just go into overdrive with my business. Or the days when everything is going perfect and apart of the plan and I’m at my happiest ! In both moments , I am flooded with support from family & friends , and my Waxsy babes but it’s truly God that keeps me going . Prayer is the most important part of my success because I understand that without God , nothing is possible . So big ups to you God for being my best friend , my confidant , my light in the darkness and so much more in between.
