We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Hermano, M.Ed and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paula, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Experiencing and witnessing growth and positive transformation. It is endless! In all phases of life, there is always a vast potential that may surprise us. Having that trust and believing in innate goodness that one can do something meaningful and impactful.

Please tell us more about your career. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Montessori… I never thought it would turn into a life journey or how the work of being a Montessori Educator would bring such profound experiences. I have been serving in different roles for the past 17 years, and I have nothing but gratitude for the amazing opportunities in the Montessori community.

From being an assistant guide, to lead guide, to completing my Master’s in Montessori and using the knowledge to create my consulting company, to serving as a Head of School, and now the Director of Programs of a phenomenal Montessori Institute that I really love, you can see how Montessori can bring you to so many places. More importantly, how the values continue to transform you into a better person.

Struggles and challenges are inevitable, of course, but I must say that with pure intentions, quality actions, dedication, and humility, these struggles become so small and can be overcome.

I am also a firm believer in “community over competition” and serving one another. As a community, we need to focus on true service and keep our eyes on the ultimate goal – to first and foremost love the child wholly. For one is not able to build a foundation of success for every child without the love and respect that they deserve. We all have this very important responsibility, and we can do this collectively. We are able to fulfill this by understanding that our intentions should be rooted from a humble heart. Avoid battling, anger, and pride; instead, honor each other’s strengths. The number of years in practice, the degrees and credentials, titles, and positions may blind us from what true service really means. Often we should ask ourselves – Is the purpose of my action – to serve or to be served?

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a weeklong visit, I like showing family and friends different kinds of experiences. From the city of Atlanta to the mountains or beaches of Georgia.

We will probably hop in different food halls such as The Works on Upper West Side, Ponce City Market, and Krog Street Market. All these places have a variety of food, activities, and shops too! The Works is just right by TopGolf and Water Reservoir Park, which has access to the beltline. PCM and KSM both have access to the beltline as well. Outside the city, Georgia is boosted by scenic beauty and natural adventures. Whoever visits us can pick their natural adventures from exploring state parks, lakes, mountains, falls, or the beaches! My personal choice would be spending time in Savannah, and the beaches close by like Tybee Island or (a bit more drive but definitely worth it) Jekyll Island.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband and my children – my best cheerleaders no matter what busyness (or maybe even craziness!) my passion takes me! Thank you to my supportive husband and ever-loving and sweetest children!

MTEI of Atlanta and our amazing learning community – my life with MTEI since 2016 has been filled with growth. I have discovered and developed new skills and talents that fueled my passion. My love for children and supporting families extended beyond teaching in the classroom. My work at MTEI allowed me to guide educators in serving children and families with the purest intentions, love, and respect. So grateful to be working with an inspiring team (special shoutout to Dr. Ashley, Cathy, Kristen, Patrick, and Katherine!) and the community of learners who believe in me and continue to lift me.
