We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patrick, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“Blessed are those who plant trees under whose shade they will never sit.” It speaks to the generosity and kindness of people who give in support of others, most of whom they’ll never meet. It’s one of the most unselfish acts, to give.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In 2012 I became a Development Officer, raising money to support student scholarships and educational opportunities at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Dr. Tyvi Small, a friend and mentor helped me get access to what became an amazing opportunity.
I worked along side Dean Mike Wirth and James Obear for over four years. We traveled the country advocating for the College of Communication and Information, meeting with alumni and friends of the University. This role ultimately led to a big move to Atlanta where I continued my work as a fundraiser with Tennessee and eventually Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM).
Three years after arriving at MSM, an opportunity to join the major gifts team at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta became available. This role as a Senior Development Officer aligned perfectly with the needs of my family and my career interests. Former VP, Rob Bentley and current Children’s COO, Ron Frieson were instrumental in this transition into the Children’s family.
The greatest lesson I learned is patience. You also have to be authentically curious about working with those who have the passion and means to help others.
When I’m away from the office, you’ll find me flying my drone. It’s the ultimate form of therapy for me and allows me to create stories from 400ft above the ground. I’ve been flying for eight years, I became a professional pilot in 2019.
Greatest lesson, fly safely. Second lesson. Learn how to edit. Every shot can be a great shot but some get left on the cutting room floor.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
With three kids it’s hard to imagine having that much time for fun but here’s a snapshot.
– The Beltline
– Brunch in Buckhead
– Workout in Piedmont Park
– Drinks at the Thompson Hotel Rooftop
– Dinner in West Midtown
– Watch the Braves or Atlanta United
– Shoot the Hootch
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Tiffany and I have three beautiful daughters, Bella (14), Remi (12), and Nico (10). They are at the center of everything I do.
Tiffany also inspires me creatively. She has a terrific marketing mind and knows what looks great on camera. I wouldn’t be half the storyteller without her counsel.
