We had the good fortune of connecting with Pat Hobaugh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pat, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In my experience from becoming a professional artist, it wasn’t that one moment you buy a gallery, turn an on sign on and then suddenly you’re in business. It took me many years, including getting advanced degrees, for me to identify as a full time professional artist and then thinking of it as a business.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One thing I’ve tried to do is to take existing art historical genres like still life and portraiture, but contemporize them to make them different and expand their horizons. For still life, I introduce narratives and pop culture references, and in portraiture I like to re-examine historical figures by contemporary standards.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It might sound macabre, but Oakland Cemetery is my #1 spot to visit and then eat at Six Feet Under. I’d take them on the belt line and then eat in Midtown. Walking in Downtown Decatur is something we like to do and eat at Brick Store Pub. As far as museums, The Center for Puppetry Arts would be one of the top things to see, especially if they have a great show on.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife, Mandy, far and away deserves the most credit for me being an artist. I wouldn’t be doing what I do if she hadn’t been supporting me for the last decade plus. I’d also like to shout out to my parents, and especially my Grandmother, who was also a painter and was very encouraging when I started.
