We had the good fortune of connecting with Oskar Gutierrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Oskar, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As an artist I know that I will not be able to work in the art world for the rest of my life and I work designing and painting with my hands. That is why I thought of creating a brand and being able to position myself in the national and international tattoo market. And thus to generate profits.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been a professional tattoo artist for 13 years. I started tattooing at my parents’ house in a small room, soldering needles, making my own machines and practicing with my friends. In those years the Internet did not exist in a massive way as in these years and there was no tutoring to inform them of learning. So I bought specialized magazines and VHS to be able to watch, learn and know a little more about this world of tattooing. In my country of origin, Chile, a person with tattoos was very badly looked at, since there were many stigmas. If you had tattoos, people judged you as a Delinquent, Satanic, etc. For this reason I worked hard to change those social taboos, showing that I could make art on people’s skin, changing lives and helping people in their confidence and security with my art.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Atlanta airport seemed impressive to me, due to the magnitude, immensity and number of flights that take place daily. Also recommend the best tattoo studio called “All Or Nothing” by my good friend Brandon Bond (one of the most recognized artists in the USA and the world). To drink and have a good time I really liked La Chingada which is located in Smyrna. I also really like Mexican cuisine and there are many good places in Smyrna for this style of food. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My father (Oscar Gutierrez) when I was a child told me that I could work in whatever I wanted, dedicate myself to what I would be passionate about regardless of the opinion of others. as long as he was good, dedicated and passionate! That advice was always on my mind. Also the support of all my friends (Carlos Catalan, Jonathan Arauna) who have always supported me with good advice and encouraging me when I have been discouraged. Carla Rivera, Diego Parraguez and my partner Carmen G. Botto, and the eternal love of my children Maite and Leonardo
