We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikkia Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nikkia, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Honestly I’ve always been an artistic person, in retrospect. I attended college and received a degree in biology/pre-dental. After working in the science field for about 3 years, my focus changed and I knew It wasn’t fulfilling for my life. It was pretty boring to be honest. And for someone who is an extrovert, I needed more. I fell back on my talent and I haven’t looked back since. I love the cosmetology field and I’m so grateful for all the opportunities that it has afforded me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What I’m most proud of today is the fact that I did exactly what I set out to do with my career. I wanted to be known not only for my craft but for also being a good human. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing legends in the entertainment industry and I am truly blessed. I credit so many people for my drive. My parents were and still are a major support system for me and my siblings. They always reminded me that I could do whatever in life that I set my mind on. I think it wasn’t as hard as most people think because I had a goal set and I would not stop until I achieved it, no matter what it took. I honestly attribute my drive to them and my days of college and pledging. There were obstacles that stood in my way but i once I overcame them I knew could do anything I wanted in this lifetime. My tenacious spirit and drive was nurtured there. I want the world to know that no matter where you come from, no matter what people tell you, you can make it. I’m a black man from a Dawson, Georgia where the odds are stacked against you, but if I can make it, anyone can. Nothing in this life is impossible when you’re a good human!!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting, I would first take him to one of my favorite spots in Atlanta, Sovereign Sweets which is owned by my friend and client Kelan Watson!! Amazing ambiance and awesome food!! And what’s a visit to Atlanta without experiencing Slutty Vegan and the awesomeness of Pinky Cole!! Not to mention we would absolutely stop by my new restaurant in progress, Soul Keato Kitchen, which will be opening in Atlanta this fall!! And we’d definitely have to stop by my former salon that I owned, Pressed Natural Hair Salon, now Luxe Salon, owned by two of my former long time hair stylists Albert Whitehead and Willis McKinney, just to laugh and talk with the old crew!! Last we would absolutely hang out on Edgewood Ave for a little nightlife entertainment!!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family who have always supported me no matter how far fetched or out of reach my ideas seemed. Thank you!!!!
