We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikesha Essono and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nikesha, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m originally from Scottsboro Alabama, where I spent the majority of my childhood. As a child, my parents made sure I was actively involved church and instilled in me the importance of helping others. They would often say, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” I’ve always remembered that statement throughout my life and have always received so much joy from helping others. At the age of 14 I knew I wanted to become a teacher so that I can help make a positive impact in childrens’ lives. Upon graduating from high school, I attended the University of Alabama at Huntsville where I received my BA in Elementary Education. Upon graduating from the University of Alabama, I moved to Morrow Georgia where I began teaching. I taught in the elementary school setting for 13 years and enjoyed it but began to feel like there was something more I needed to do. Upon leaving the public school system in spring of 2018, I began focusing more on my skincare journey. It was then that I realized I wanted to be an esthetician. I graduated from the Atlanta Institute of Aesthetics and became a licensed esthetician in March of 2020. Shortly afterwards, I opened my spa business in June of 2020. I know that I am operating in my purpose because I am so fulfilled in my new career. I am continuously learning and educating others about their skin. As the saying goes, “once a teacher always a teacher.’
What should our readers know about your business?
The road to becoming an esthetician, foot reflexologist, and energy healer wasn’t easy. It was a lot of hard work and determination, especially since I had a few “nay sayers” that couldn’t understand why I changed careers. Not only was I a new esthetician but I opened my business during a pandemic, so it seemed like the odds of succeeding were against me. Like most startup businesses, I faced challenges that came with the first few months of opening up my business. One thing about me is that once I set my mind to do something, I stand firmly behind my decision and follow through with it. I’m so glad I always have. I am so happy and others that know my story have become inspired to make the necessary changes in their own lives. I’m so happy to say that I am the proud owner of Sono Serenity Spa LLC, which is a home-based spa located in Ellenwood Georgia. My spa provides clients with a serene and intimate environment where they receive my undivided attention. I make sure to listen to my clients concerns and customize their treatment accordingly. I also like to enhance my client experience by personally contacting each client to see how they’re doing or feeling since their treatment. It’s truly an experience when a client visits my spa. I love to make my skin look and feel good, so I have wanted to translate that onto my clients. Like the lotus flower in my logo, I help my clients’ natural beauty shine through.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were to visit, we would go to Atlantic Station. We would go to the Regal Cinema to watch a movie, eat at Hobnob for good food and shop until we were exhausted. On a different day of the week we would visit Ponce City Market where we would eat and shop. We would also visit Perspire Sauna Studio to sweat out the calories then drink smoothies and play cards at home. It’s nothing like relaxing and laughing about old times after eating good and shopping.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family, friends, and staff at the Atlanta Institute of Aesthetics have always been my biggest encouragers and supporters.
