We had the good fortune of connecting with Nia Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nia, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to be a professional artist because I realized that creating art was more than a hobby; art is my passion. I didn’t always know that I would have a creative career, but my mother is an artist; she always encouraged me to express myself creatively and follow my passions in life. I’ve explored various facets of art (makeup artistry, art education, medical illustration, and various forms of studio art). Painting is where I have found my love for expressing my imagination on canvas. I’m currently a full-time artist and graduate student at SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) pursuing my M.F.A. Often, “chasing your dreams” can be a little intimidating, but it can also be fulfilling. Deciding to pursue art was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I create artwork that celebrates the beauty and diversity of Black women. The Black women in my paintings have inspired me or changed my life somehow. These women are friends, family members, and mentors. The elements of nature within my portraits symbolize elegance, strength, and resilience. In viewing my artwork, I hope that my audience becomes encouraged to challenge the imposition of stereotypes. I also hope to inspire viewers to appreciate diversity, the nuances of beauty, and what makes us unique.

Through my business, Art By Nia J, I sell journals with my artwork on the cover and I create custom paintings.

Journals (online): Imagine being able to carry one of your favorite paintings with you in your purse or backpack. This 120 page Spiral Notebook comes with beautiful artwork on the cover with a hand-painted glossy finish and glitter to imitate the texture of the original “Free” painting by artist Nia Jackson. This spiral notebook is great for journaling, brainstorming, creative writing, taking notes, or simply making shopping lists.

Custom paintings: Online requests (family portraits, individual portraits, couple portraits), etc.

I have overcome the challenges that I have faced in my art career by pushing forward, trusting my abilities, and always seeking opportunities for growth.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a foodie so I love trying new restaurants. A few places that I enjoy are Fox Bros, Marcel, South City Kitchen, and Jukejoint. I also enjoy visiting art museums like the high museum of art

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My art professors at Spelman College (Class of ’17), family, and friends inspired and encouraged me to pursue my art.
