We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikyla Baker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mikyla, how do you think about risk?
I am a firm believer in taking risks. I look at it like this. If I win, great. If I lose, did I really lose? No, I learned. Before I started my business I was working a job on campus while in college. I loved it, but I hated it. However, I am forever grateful for it. After a while I took a lash class. Then I would be working the on campus job, get off from there, and go home to do lashes. One day I was sitting at work thinking “I could be lashing right now making more money in a day than what I’m paid here in two weeks.” I thought long and hard about it that whole day at work. I went into the office and quit that same day. I didn’t even have a huge clientele then. However, I took that risk and stepped out on faith and God did the rest. I started getting bookings from left and right. It was crazy, bigger than what I had imagined honestly.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Overall, I am just proud of how far I’ve come when it comes to all aspects of lashing. It takes A LOT of consistency, practice, and patience. This was definitely a challenge, especially when it came to running my business and finishing up a Health Science program to receive my BHS all at once. I remember when I lashed my very first client it took me about 3 hours just on ONE eye. Keep in mind, a normal set time is 2-3 hours (both eyes). I remember telling her that I had to use to the bathroom but in reality I had to break down, cry, and pull myself back together to finish the set. That night I told myself that I would only do enough sets to make my money in which I had spent on the products back. However, I prayed and stayed down. I continued to practice. I think about that day often, I am so thankful that I kept going. I’ve learned great communication skills, networked, learned how to prioritize. Madonna Minks is here to make every woman feel special. I put my all into every girl’s set making them fit according to the eye.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a very adventurous, but laid back person. It would depend on our moods and the weather. One day we would go get mani/pedis, facials, massages. Then head over to get us some seafood (all pretty girls eat seafood) and drinks.

Probably chill after that. Another day we might go to a hookah lounge or having a shopping day. If we’re feeling extra adventurous, rock climbing or going on a hike. Maybe go to the pool to just chill, take our note books out, and manifest.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely have to give a shout-out to my sister, Malaysia. She’s is really my BIGGEST supporter. You would literally think it’s her business. Every flyer, every reel, every post, no matter what it is, she’s promoting it. She has always assured me that I am going to win and that my business will turn into something way bigger than what I prayed for. I’m so thankful and grateful to have her in my life. She is truly the other half of me and I love her way beyond this lifetime.
