We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Dawes Birt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always admired business owners and entrepreneurs and their abilities to step out and call their own shots. Running a business is never easy, and it comes with significant risks. However, it can be very rewarding. I grew up in a home with hard-working women who never talked about owning their own business. My mother and grandmother were always dedicated to doing a good job for the people they worked for. Having my own business didn’t come to me until much later in life, but I find it’s the path I belong on. I don’t always know what I’m doing nor the outcome; however, it’s probably one of the best decisions I’ve made. Being a business owner, especially running a small business, allows you to connect to other small businesses and communities. Being able to make a difference is impactful.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m from The Bronx, New York. Raised by strong and cultured women from Jamaica, West Indies. They helped define who I’ve become… Hard Working, Driven, Dedicated, Passionate and Determined. Growing up in The Bronx, there were good times and times when I had to deal with some pressures from living in the projects. I have no regrets, but I used my life in New York as a blueprint to keep going and not give up.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Sample itinerary for if a friend were to visit the city.

I would start the week on Friday and, depending on when we would go to High-Frequency Friday or Friday Jazz at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Then we’d head to one of my favorite restaurants, Woodward & Park. It’s a restaurant and patio located at the Larkin in Memorial Shopping Center. They have great food and drinks and provide excellent service.

We might spend the day on The Beltline and window shop, take in the sights, and have brunch in Ponce City Market on Saturday. Then, spend the afternoon at Piedmont Park, enjoying some activities. Finally, we would hit up a Live concert at City Winery in the evening.

On Sunday, we would go to church, brunch at Kat’s Corner Coffee Shop, and then spend the rest of the day relaxing at home.

On Monday, we might go to Krog Street Market for a little more shopping. Then, since my friend loves baseball, I would take her to the Battery for the Braves game and grab a bite at Buteco.
