We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia & Donald Fulton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mia & Donald, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Mia and Donald started Scholarly Scouts to introduce a life-changing institute that will help scholars shatter all barriers. Coming from a small rural community in South Georgia, access to research opportunities and learning how to pursue a career in science and psychology were limited. Our goal is to mentor students to propel them to succeed in high school, college, graduate school, and beyond. Donald and Mia designed their programs to increase accessibility to college/grad school preparation tools and research opportunities for students worldwide.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Scholarly Scouts is built upon four major principles: integrity, community, innovation, and authenticity. We strive to guide our scholars to implement academic honesty and integrity while completing their research projects and college applications. This sets the stage for a promising future. Providing access to a community of scholars gives our scholars a sense of purpose and belonging. We encourage scholars to grow by networking with their peers and mentors. Additionally, we ensure that our scholars exercise their critical thinking skills to create innovative research. Introducing new ideas and concepts in research prepares our scholars for a highly competitive college/grad school application. We encourage our scholars to lead with authenticity. Exploring our passions fuel valued, respected, and motivated scholars.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Having mentors allowed us to thrive in our educational journey. Mia had phenomenal mentors that made her succeed in biomedical research. During her time as an undergraduate at Savannah State University, Mia had a chance to be a part of the MARC U STAR program under the mentorship of Dr. Takayuki Nitta. His mentorship allowed Mia to learn how to get into a PhD program and gain research experience. Mia also had the chance to attend Mayo Clinic for a summer internship with Pamela McLean, PhD. Her mentorship sparked Mia to pursue research in dementia related disease. As Mia completes her PhD, Adviye Ergul, MD, PhD inspires me to continue to strive for her dreams.
Donald also had a series of mentors who inspired him to continue his journey into clinical psychology. During his time at Barry University, Dr. Agnes Shine always believed in Donald’s mission. While navigating his path to get into a doctoral program, Dr. Jonathan Mathias Lassiter allowed Donald to gain research experience as a clinical research manager at Rowan University. To gain clinical experience, Donald completed an internship at UT Southwestern under the mentorship of Dr. Andrew McGarrahan. Each of our mentors played a vital role in our success.
